Margaret Catherine Penning, 89, of Granville, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at Sanford Care Center in Sheldon.
Margaret Catherine Penning was born May 14, 1919, at rural Granville, the daughter of Gregor and Mary (Reith) Penning. Catherine was raised and educated in the Granville area. She then did domestic work in the Granville area and later moved to Worthington, Minn., where she worked in the Campbell's Soup factory. In the early 1950s she moved back to Granville to care for her father and she also worked as a cook at the Orange City Hospital in Orange City. She had been a resident of Sanford Care Center since Sept. 19, 2008.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville and the church Guild. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and quilting. She loved her cats.
Survivors include two sisters, Caroline Klein of Melrose, Minn., and Angeline Goebel of Worthington, Minn.; one brother, Andrew and his wife Vitty Penning of Granville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, Raymond in infancy, Lawrence, Nic, Vincent, Edward and Leo Penning; and four sisters, Emma Sauer, Cora Schlichte, Florence Block and Mercedes Beckman.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with the Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Granville. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today (Thursday). There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 5:30 p.m., all at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.
Casketbearers will be Dave Berkenpas, Kevin Burggraff, David Goebel, Tony Gruenes, Lyle Penning, Adam Pottebaum and Randy Roder.
