Nickolas J. "Nick" Bomgaars

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Nickolas J. "Nick" Bomgaars, 81, of Sioux Center died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church, Sioux Center with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Interment will be prior to the service in Hope Cemetery, Hull, Iowa. A family service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Funeral Home, Sioux Center. Visitation will be 2 to 7:30 p.m. today with the family present from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nickolas J. Bomgaars was born March 29, 1922 near Middleburg, Iowa, the son of Joe and Nellie (Schalekamp) Bomgaars Sr. He attended country school and worked for his father and area farmers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a supply clerk. After his honorable discharge, he returned home. He married Dorothy J. Olivier on June 22, 1948 in Hull, Iowa. Nick and Dorothy farmed south of Hull and later southeast of Rock Valley. In 1972 they moved to Sioux Center where Nick began building homes for his brother-in-law.

A carpenter by trade, Nick was able to repair or fix just about anything. He enjoyed gardening, working in his yard and liked spending his spare time fishing. Nick was a member of the First Reformed Church, Sioux Center.

Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Bomgaars of Sioux Center; his son and daughter-in-law, Norwin and Myra Bomgaars of Orange City, and his two grandchildren, Sarah and Mitchell Bomgaars; his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Nelvina Bomgaars Jr. of Hull; a brother-in-law, William Van Sloten of Sioux Center; a sister-in-law, Angeline Bomgaars of Sioux Center; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Arie and Esther Olivier of Sioux Center; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gertrude and Donald Vant Hul of Sioux Center, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Geneva Van Sloten and Muriel Mae Bomgaars, a brother, Jake Bomgaars, and two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Olivier and Nellie Nyhuis.

The family requests memorials be directed to the Gideon's International Bible Fund.
