From The Sioux County Capital, Orange City, Iowa, April 3, 1941:

MRS. J. MELCHERS DIED WEDNESDAY
Had Been Critically Ill Only 11/2 Days at Her Sister's Home

Mrs. Jake Melchers, 51 years old age, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Henry Westra in Orange City Wednesday at 1 P.M. (April 2, 1941) She had been suffering with heart trouble and dropsy (edema) but was critically ill only a day an a half before her death. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 P.M. at the home of a sister, Mrs. Ada Ard of Maurice and at 1:30 P.M. in the First Reformed Church at Maurice. Burial will be in the Maurice Cemetery.

Jake Melchers rushed home from Lamont, Iowa, where he is an instructor in a CCC camp but arrived here an hour after his wife's death. Mr. and Mrs. Melchers had packed their belongings in Sioux City and were planning to move to Lamont when Mrs. Melchers became ill and she was brought here for care.

Mrs. Melchers was born at Maurice, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mieras. She was married Jan. 8, 1920 to Jake Melchers and the couple lived in Maurice until a few years ago when they moved to Sioux City. Surviving are the husband, 4 sisters, Mrs. Henry Westra, Mrs. Peter Vande Poppe, of Maurice, Mrs. Ada Ard of Maurice, and Mrs. J. W. Kemp of Lewistown, Montana and two brothers, Peter Mieras of Orange City, and Jake Mieras of Maurice.

Funeral services will be in charge of Revs. Roggen, Van Raal, and Nattress.
