Beckmann, Henry Jr. 1884-1943 & Katherine Trapp Family

This story was taken from page 62 of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Book 1886-1986. It was transcribed by Sarah Theis for the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Henry Beckmann, Jr. was born in New Vienna, Iowa and came here as a child. He was born on July 1, 1884. He married Katherine Trapp on February 14, 1911. She was born March 3, 1889 and died December 22, 1974. He died February 10, 1943.

Katherine Trapp’s parents also homesteaded south of Granville. They were neighbors of the Beckmanns.

Henry and Katherine had three children: Leo, Marcella and Theresa.

Katherine Trapp born 10 March 1887 in Granville, IA died 22 December 1974 in Orange City, IA. Her parents were Mathias Herman Trapp born 18 May 1840 in Luxembourg died 28 March 1908 in Randolph, Cedar, NE and Katherine Thelen born August 1847 in Germany died 14 November 1902 in Granville, IA. Adeline born 18 December 1916 in Remsen, IA died 9 October 1981 in Westbrook, MN. Leo and Adeline had two sons and two daughters. Sons - Dennis Beckmann of Apple Valley MN, Gary Beckmann of Mankota MN; Daughters - Sheryl Mrs. Richard Tracy of Lake Park MN, Patricia Mrs. John Schaefer of Mount Rose SD

2. Marcella E Beckmann born 10 January 1914 in Granville, IA died 2 April 1986 in Orange City, IA. She married Lawrence J Steffes 4 August 1933 in Sioux City, IA. Lawrence was born 21 August 1909 in New Cambria, Missouri died 19 October 1976 in Granville, IA. Marcella and Lawrence had six children. Marvin, Darrel (1942-2000), Emmet, James (1933-1956), Joan and Carol.

3. Theresa Beckmann born 13 September 1915 in Granville, IA died 22 April 1982 in Granville, IA. Theresa married Jerome T Grady 9 January 1938 in Granville, IA. Jerome was born 12 October 1907 in Granville, IA died 30 March 1979 in Granville, IA. Theresa and Jerome had six sons and two daughters. Richard of Hicksville, N.Y., John of Bigelow, Minn., Russell of Sioux Falls, S.D., Harv, Bruce and Brian, all at home; Mrs. Brian (Bonnie) Kruse of Alton and Mrs. Dan (Ruth) Steward of Cherokee.

4. Emma Regina Beckmann born 11 March 1917 in Granville, IA died 13 April 1917 in East Orange Township, Granville, IA.

Rites Saturday For Well Known Granville Farmer
Henry Beckman prominent Granville farmer, passed on Wednesday night, Feb. 10 at his home at the age of 58- years. Funeral services -were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Joseph's church, Granville, Rev. Clemens Knobbe officiating.
Henry Beckmann was born July 1, 1884 at New Vienna, Iowa. He came to Granville with his parents when he was eleven years old. On Feb. 14, 1911. He was married to Katherine Trapp and since that time they have made their home three and one half miles south of Granville. To this union five children were born, namely: Leo, Mrs. Larry Steffes (Marcella), Mrs. Jerome Grady (Theresa), all of Granville, and two daughters who died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife and three children, his aged mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Beckman, eight grandchildren: four brothers; John of Granville, Anton of Dyersville, Frank and Louis of St. Joseph, Michigan; and two sisters: Mrs. Hans Paulson of Boyden and Mrs. Joe Plagge of Del Rapids. Sister Regina; Mrs. Frank Vortherms, preceded him in death. Interment was made in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe Sauer, Joe List. Tony Auchstetter. Leo Reistoffer, Joe Schlichte, and John Goebel.

MRS.H. BECKMANN Mrs. Henry "Katie" Beckmann, 85, Granville, died Dec. 22 at the Orange City hospital following a long illness. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 27 in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Granville. The Rev. Edward Hoffmann officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home at Remsen. The Rosary was said at 5, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Dec. 26 in Spalding Hall. Mrs. Beckmann, the former Katherine Trapp, was born March 10, 1899 at Granville. She lived in the town all her life. She was a member of the Christian Mothers' Society. Survivors include a son, Leo of Westbrook. Minn., and two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Marcella) Steffes and Mrs. Jerome (Theresa). Grady, both of Granville; a brother. Peter Trapp of Wahpeton, Minn.; 18 grandchildren and 31 greatgrandchildren.

Beckman of Granville died Sunday at the age of 82 years at his home there, following an illness of a year’s duration closing a long life all of which was spent in Iowa. He was born at New Vienna, Iowa, near the western edge of Dubuque County, on July 31, 1849, the year of the great gold rush. He grew to young manhood and was married at New Vienna to Miss Elizabeth Klaus who survives her life partner. After residing in eastern Iowa for a number of years they decided to move west, coming to Sioux County in 1895 where they farmed and were very successful in this occupation. They raised a family of eight children, one child having died in infancy. Each is a highly respected citizen in the community in which he or she lives. The children are as follows: John, Granville; Anton, Dyersville, Iowa; Henry, Granville; Frank, Granville; Louis, St. Joe, Michigan; Mrs. Frank Vortherms, Granville; Mrs. Hans Paulson, Granville; and Mrs. Joseph Plagge, Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Funeral services for the pioneer were held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Granville at 8:30 A.M., August 12, the last rites being conducted by Reverend Laurence Schoeppner, and interment took place at Saint Joseph's Cemetery.

She was married to Henry Beckmann in New Vienna and the couple later moved to the Granville vicinity. Mrs. Beckmann was the oldest resident in the Granville vicinity. Mrs. Beckmann was the oldest resident in the Granville vicinity, as she had almost reached her 99th birthday annivesary . Her husband died about 20 years ago. Survivors are four sons, John of Granville ; Antoine , Lyersville ; Frank and Louis both of St. Joseph, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Hans (Cecelia) Toulsen. Boyden and Mrs. Joe (Rose) Plathe , Dell Rapids, S. D. Also 35 grandchildren and 68 great-grandchildren .

OBITUARY of Matt Trapp 1838-1908 Alton Democrat of April 4, 1908 Granville News Word was received that Matt Trapp had died at his home in Randolph NE. He was well known in this community having resided on a farm southwest of town for years. (See his wife's obit Mrs. Katherine (Thelen) Trapp 1847-1902 for further details of the family.)

Mrs. Mathias Trapp died at her home south of town last Friday at the age of fifty-seven years from injuries received from a fall. Last Wednesday while climbing a ladder to get some corn from the crib she fell and broke her limb just above the knee also sustaining internal injuries.
Paralysis set in and death followed Friday morning. The funeral was held on Monday at St. Joseph's church Rev. Gerlemann conducting the ceremonies. Interment took place at Ihe catholic cemetery. The diseased leaves a sorrowing husband
and three sons and three daughters.
(The family found in the 1885 census consisted of Mathias Trapp born abt 1838 in Germany, wife Katy age 37, Children Maria 12, Anna 10, Mina 7, Herman 5, and Heinrich 0, In the 1900 census two more children were added Peter 14, and Catherine 11. It is believed that Catherine/Katherine's maiden name may have been Thelen as found in a child's entry in the 1925 census)
