This story was taken from page 62 of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Book 1886-1986. It was transcribed by Sarah Theis for the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Henry Beckmann, Sr. married Elizabeth Klaus and they lived at New Vienna, Iowa. They had 9 children: John, Anna, Anthony, Henry, Frank, Regina, Cecelia, Louis, and Rosa. The younger ones were born here in the Granville area. They homesteaded south of Granville, where Elmer Beckmann farmed. They helped build the church.

Henry Beckmann Sr. was born 18 July 1849 in New Vienna, Dubuque, IA died 1931 in Iowa City, IA. His parents were Johannes Heinrici Beckmann born 1828 in Germany died 1931 and Maria Catherine Rakel born 1834 died 4 November 1952. He married Maria Elizabeth Klaus 23 November 1872 in New Vienna, IA.

Maria Elizabeth Klaus was born 23 November 1854 in New Vienna, IA died 4 November 1952 in Le Mars, IA. Her parents were Anton Klaus born 26 July 1819 in Oldenburg, Germany died 20 January 1907 in Dubuque County, IA and Christina Landwehr born 10 February 1832 in Oldenburg, Germany died 30 April 1882 in Dubuque, IA. Henry and Rose were the parents of nine children.

1. John Henry Beckmann born 11 January 1874 in New Vienna, IA died 20 March 1972 in Orange City, IA. He married Katharina Margareta Roling on 29 January 1901 in New Vienna, IA. John and Katharina are the parents of nine children: Lawrence H. b. August 9, 1902 d. July 24, 1973, Petronella E. "Nelli" b. August 3, 1904 d. July 21, 1945, Raymond Anton b. April 20, 1906 d. October 7, 1993, Henrietta L. b. August 31, 1907 d. February 1994, Frank Joseph b. November 18, 1908 d. January 1986, Frances Regina b. November 18, 1908 d. February 6, 1920, Elmer John b. January 26, 1911 d. November 3, 1985, Marina Regina b. September 19, 1912 d. March 12, 2012 and Clarence Joseph b. February 17, 1916 d. August 15, 1994.

2. Anthony (Anton) Beckmann born 14 October 1877 in New Vienna, IA died 13 February 1953 in Dubuque, IA. He married Theresa Maria Sabers on 25 January 1910 in New Vienna, IA. Obituary lists their marriage as 11 January 1910. They had two children. Irvin Henry Beckmann born 16 May 1911 in Andover, SD died 22 October 1964 in Dubuque, IA and Clarence William Beckmann born 28 August 1913 in Andover, SD died 24 June 1986 in Dyersville, Dubuque, IA.

3. Anna Beckmann born 1880 in Dubuque, IA died unknown. Anna is not on the 1890 census. She is listed on the 1880 census as Anny, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth.

4. Henry Beckmann Jr. born 1 July 1884 in New Vienna, IA died 10 February 1943 in Granville, IA. Henry married Katherine Trapp 11 February 1911 in Granville, IA. They had five children, three surviving to adulthood. Leo 1912-2009, Marcella 1914-1986, Theresa 1915-1982, Emma Regina 1917-1917 and Antonetta May 1918-1918.

5. Frank S Beckmann born 27 January 1888 in New Vienna, IA died March 1967 in Saint Joseph, MI. He married Mary Vortherms 16 June 1914 in Sioux County, IA. They had two daughters, Alvina (Henry Dieckman) and Agnes Beckmann and a son, Joseph Beckmann.

6. Regina C Beckmann born 9 June 1891 in New Vienna, IA died 8 August 1937 in Granville, IA. Regina married Frank Vortherms 14 February 1911. They were the parents of eight children, Evelyn (Walt Slinger), Isabella (Ed Hemmen), Arnold (Rosella Becker), Ernest (Adella Jungers), Geroge (Mildred Zenk), Johanna (Anton Klein), Sylvester (Ellen Jungers), Leo (Agnes Klein).

7. Cecilia Beckmann born 29 October 1893 in New Vienna, IA died 3 May 1974 in Orange City, IA. Cecilia married Hans Paulson 14 January 1928 in Granville, IA. Hans and Cecilia are the parents of:
Florence Agnes b. March 15, 1930 d. November 20, 2001
Infant Son born and died in 1935. Her obituary in the Sioux Center News is as follows:

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville at 10:30 A.M., May 7 for Mrs. Hans Paulsen, 80, of Boyden, who died at the Orange City hospital, May 3.
Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Mrs. Paulsen, the former Cecilia Beckman, was born October 30, 1893, at New Vienna. She was married January 14, 1928, at Granville. Her husband died January 19, 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Florence; a sister, Rosey; and a brother, Louis.

8. Louis L Beckmann born 7 August 1897 in Granville, IA died 3 October 1976 in Coloma, MI. Louis married Mary Deickmann 27 November 1923 in Lyons, Clinton, IA. Mary born 14 October 1895 died May 1973. They had four sons, three surviving to adulthood. Vernon, Cletus, James and Ralph 1934-1935.

9. Rosa Beckmann born 31 December 1900 in Granville, IA died 26 January 1976 in Minnehaha county, SD. She married Joseph Plagge 24 January 1921 in Granville, IA. They had four children. William 1922-2004, Bernetta (Joseph Stepanek) 1924-2002, Mathilda (Joseph Plagge) 1926-2009, Herman Rudy 1929-2020.

Henry J. Beckman of Granville died Sunday at the age of 82 years at his home there, following an illness of a year’s duration closing a long life all of which was spent in Iowa. He was born at New Vienna, Iowa, near the western edge of Dubuque County, on July 31, 1849, the year of the great gold rush. He grew to young manhood and was married at New Vienna to Miss Elizabeth Klaus who survives her life partner. After residing in eastern Iowa for a number of years they decided to move west, coming to Sioux County in 1895 where they farmed and were very successful in this occupation. They raised a family of eight children, one child having died in infancy. Each is a highly respected citizen in the community in which he or she lives.
The children are as follows: John, Granville; Anton, Dyersville, Iowa; Henry, Granville; Frank, Granville; Louis, St. Joe, Michigan; Mrs. Frank Vortherms, Granville; Mrs. Hans Paulson, Granville; and Mrs. Joseph Plagge, Dell Rapids, South Dakota.
Funeral services for the pioneer were held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Granville at 8:30 A.M, August 12, the last rites being conducted by Reverend Laurence Schoeppner, and interment took place at Saint Joseph's Cemetery.

Funeral Servies Will Be Held At Granville For Mrs. E Beckmanns

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Beckmann, 98, of Granville, who died Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the Sacred Heart hospital will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 at 9:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic church in Granville. The Rev. J. J. Dalhoff will conduct the servies.
Elizabeth Klaus Beckmann was born Nov. 23 1853 in New Vienna, Iowa. She was married to Henry Beckmann in New Vienna and the couple later moved to the Granville vicinity.
Mrs. Beckmann was the oldest resident in the Granville vicinity, as she had almost reached her 99th birthday anniversary. Her husband died about 20 years ago.
Survivors are four sons, John of Granville, Antoine , Lyersville, Frank and Louis both of St Joseph, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Hans (Ceclia) Toulsen, Boyden and Mrs. Joe (Rose) Plathe, Dell Rapids, S.D. Also 35 grandchildren and 68 great-grandchildren.
