Engeldinger, Peter 1840-1918 and Emma Masuen Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book 1883-1983 page 133. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Peter Engeldinger was born in Luxembourg. He married Emma Masuen who was born and raised near Alton. (She was actually born in Luxembourg.) Peter and Emma had seven Children – three boys and four girls. The boys were John, Mike and Emil and the girls were Margaret (Mrs. Mike Zenk), Mary (Mrs. Frank Hemmen), Barbara (Mrs. George Jungers) and Kate (Mrs. John Joanning).

RESEARCH Notes:
Pierre ‘Peter’ Engeldinger was born 25 Jan 1840 Luxembourg, Germany died 1 March 1918 Remsen Plymouth County IA. He was the son of Francisel Engeldinger 1797-1861 and Catherine Lieber 1799-1888. He married Emma Masuen on 16 of Nov 1882 Plymouth county IA.

Emma Masuen was born 31 Aug 1860 Luxembourg and died 26 Oct 1924 Alton IA. She was the daughter of Michael Masuen 1836-1901 and Anna Margareta Serres 1836-1914. They had seven children:

Children: They were the parents of nine children, two having died in infancy. Information on the children came from local obituaries, birth, marriages and deaths, and public member trees on ancestry.com.

1. John Engeldinger born Apr 26,1885 Alton IA died April 1963. he married Philomena Biever Feb 4, 1918. Their children were Mrs. Paul Gorgen of Granville, Mrs. Muth of Hawarden, Harley of Sioux City. See the BIOS on this page for John Engeldinger family.

2. Mary Engeldinger was born Apr 26, 1888 and died Sep 18, 1926 Granville IA. She married Frank Hemmen Feb 1, 1912 and resided on a farm near Granville. They were the parents of seven children – Leo, Edmund, Arnold, Claude, Viola, Winifred, and Lucille. Funeral held at St. Joseph’s Church Granville.

3. Barbara Engeldinger was born Jan 18, 1890 at Alton IA and died Sep 18, 1965 married George N. Jungers 1890-1968 on Jan 14, 1918. They had six children: Mrs. Robert Muth Iowa City; Mrs. Leo Georgen of Granville, Mrs. Merlyn Niichel of Alton; Bernard of Hospers and Herbert of Chicago. One son George Jr. preceded her in death. Funeral was in St. Mary’s Church at Alton.

4. Emil Engeldinger was born 16 Mar 1892 died Apr 1969 buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery Alton IA.
1950 census states Emil Engeldinger as 58 years old, single, he was a janitor at bowling alley.

5. Michael ‘Mike’ Engeldinger born 17 Mar 1894 Alton IA died 17 Jun 1943 Hawarden IA. He married Celia Emma Ney born 2 Apr 1899 Pipestone MN and died Jun 1964. Children unknown.

6. Margaret ‘Maggie’ Engeldinger born 3 Mar 1896 Alton IA died 25 Jun 1937 Alton IA She married Michael Zenk 1889-1971 on 26 Nov 1918 Alton IA. They were the parents of eight children, five were named – Mildred Emma Zenk 1919-2011, Milo John Zenk 1922-1945, Alvin Theodore Zenk 1925-1998, Alfred Casper Zenk 1925 – 1982, Cyril Michael Zenk 1931-2004 and Three others not named.

7. Catherine ‘Katie’ Engeldinger born 27 May 1899 Alton IA died 24 Jan 1983 Arlington, MN. She married Joseph Anton Joanning 1898-1977 They had three children, one was named Evelyn Emma Joanning 1923-1994.

OBITUARY of Peter Engeldinger 1840-1918

Peter Engeldinger died March 1, at the home, six miles south of Alton, which has been his home since 1871. He had been unwell for a time, but friends hoped for recovery until recently, when his illness assumed a serious turn and death came steadily and surely.
Mr. Engeldinger was born in Contern, Luxemborg, January 25, 1840, came to the United States in 1870 and to Sioux County in 1871. He left here that summer for two years and then came back to the farm which he had tilled and improved in 1873. In 1882 he married Margaret (was Emma) Masuen, of Le Mars and she survives him.
There are six children, who were all present at the funeral—John, Emil, Michael, Margaret, Kate, Mrs. Barbara Jungers and Mrs. Mary Hemmen, of Granville.
A large concourse of old friends and neighbors attended the funeral, which was held at St. Mary's Church in Alton on Monday, the sermon being preached by Very Reverend Father F. J. Brune.

OBITUARY of Emma Engeldinger

Alton Democrat of Nov 1, 1924 Was Native of Duchy of Luxembourg. Mrs. Emma Engeldinger Passed Beyond at Home of Daughter Near Alton.
Friends were shocked Sunday morning to receive word that Mrs. Emma Engeldinger , one of the prominent women of the community for many years had died suddenly.
Mrs. Engeldinger was taken sick last April and had been in poor health ever since although she was up and around until the last day. She suffered a stroke of apoplexy at ten o’clock and passed away at 12:15 that night with the children all present at her bedside during her last moments. She passed away peacefully fortified by the last sacred rites of her church of which she had been a lifelong member.
Mrs. Emma Engel dinger, nee Emma Masuen, was born at Harlingen Luxembourg Aug 31, 1800 (1860), where she lived until 20 years of age when, in company with her father she came to America ..(line of print illegible)...the family.
In the fall of 1882 she was united in marriage to Peter Engeldinger of Le Mars and settled on a farm six miles south of Alton where she resided until two years ago when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Mike Zenk, two miles east of Alton.
Mrs. Engeldinger was the mother of nine children, John, Mrs. Frank Hemmen, Mrs. George Jungers, Mike, Emil, Mrs. Mike Zenk, Mrs. Joe Joanning, and two dying in infancy. Three sisters and two brothers also survive her. Mrs. Emil Gloden of Hospers, Mrs. Math. Gloden of Lansing, MI. Mike Masuen of Granville, Mrs. Joe Remacle of Cottonwood Idaho and John Masuen of Clinton IA.
Mrs. Engeldinger was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends in this community and held an enviable place in the hearts of all who knew her. She was a true Christian woman of splendid character and many fine qualities and true friend to many fortunate enough to know her.
She was laid to rest beside her husband who proceeded her to the Beyond six years ago, at St. Mary’s cemetery. The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 9:30 o’clock form St. Mary’s church. Very Rev. F. J. Brune officiating. Those from a distance who were present were Mr. and Mrs. Math Gloden of Lansing MI, Mrs. Mike Masuen of Granville and John Maseun of Clinton.
