Engeldinger, John 1885-1963 and Philomena Biever Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book of 1883-1983 page 133. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Iowa Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

John Engeldinger, born April 26, 1885 near Alton, married Philomena Biever, born September 17, 1894 near Alton, on Feb 4, 1918 at St. Mary’s Church in Alton. They farmed in the Alton area until 1957 when they retired and moved to town. They had three children: Maxine born December 21, 1919, Ethelyn born January 24, 1925 and Harlan, born December 23, 1932.

Maxine married Paul Goergen of Granville on October 20, 1942 at St. Mary’s Church in Alton. They had five children: Sheryl (Mrs. Dennis Feller); Karen (Mrs. Richard Glennic); Dale; Lynn (Mrs. Gordon Pottebaum); and Lois (Mrs. Dan Paulsen). Maxine died October 6, 1965 at the Orange City hospital.

Ethelyn married Vincent Muth of Hawarden at St. Mary’s Church of Alton on May 14, 1947. They have two children: Terry and Linda.

Harlen married Darlene Reuter on February 4, 1958 at St. James Church Le Mars. They have five boys: Larry, Michael, Gregory, David and Richard.

Mr. and Mrs. John Engeldinger also have fourteen great -grandchildren.
John Died April 4, 1963. Philomena passed away Sept. 13, 1983.

John Engeldinger was born 26 Apr 1885 Alton IA and died 4 Apr 1963 Alton IA. He was the son of Peter Engeldinger 1840-1918 and Emma Masuen 1860-1924. (see their BIOS on this page) John married on 4 Feb 1918 Alton IA to Philomena Biever 1894-1983.

Philomena Clothilda Biever was born 17 Sep 1894 Alton IA and died 13 Sep 1983 Sioux City IA. She was the daughter of John Biever 1860-1905 and Helena Wolf 1866-1941.

John Engeldinger and Philomena Biever had three children, they are further referred to in the above church book narrative.

Source: Alton Democrat (10-14-1965) Born: December 2, 1919 Died: 1965 Mrs. Paul Goergen, 45, passed away in the Orange City Hospital at 8:40 Wednesday morning where she was taken by ambulance Tuesday evening, after becoming suddenly ill at her home. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Granville, Saturday morning at 10:00 o’clock. Reverend N.J. Becker officiating. Burial was in the Parish Cemetery, Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen, in charge. Rosary was recited at Fisch Funeral Home Thursday evening and at Spalding Hall Friday evening. Maxine Engeldinger was born December 2, 1919 at Alton, daughter of John and Philomena Engeldinger. She attended St. Mary’s School. On October 20, 1942, she was married to Paul Goergen at St. Mary’s Church, Alton. They resided in Omaha, Nebraska and Texas, while he was in the service, coming to Granville in April 1946, where they since resided. He was a rural mail carrier. She was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and member and treasurer of the C.D. of A’s. Surviving are her husband, four daughters, one son: Sheryl and Karen Goergen of Sioux City, Dale, Lynn and Lois at home, her mother, Mrs. Philomena Engeldinger of Granville, one sister, (Ethelyn) Mrs. Vincent Muth of Hawarden, one brother Harlan Engeldinger of Sioux City. Pallbearers were Arnold Hoefler, Arnold Krepr, Magnus Goebel, Ray List, Andrew Penning, and Bob Smid.

Ethelyn E. Muth, 76, rural Hawarden, died Friday, Nov. 2,2001 at the Akron Care Center in Akron. Funeral Mass was Tuesday, Nov. 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens and Msgr. Richard Zenk officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ethelyn Muth was born, Jan. 24, 1925 at Alton, to Philomena (Beaver) and John Engeldinger. She married Vincent Muth on May 14,1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. They made their home on a farm southeast of Hawarden.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden and the St. Mary's Guild.
Survivors include her husband, Vincent; son, Terry of rural Hawarden; daughter, Linda Muth of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Harlan Engeldinger of Sioux City; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Maxine Georgen; and brother-in-law Paul Georgen.

3. Harlen M. Engeldinger born 23 Dec 1931 Alton IA
Engeldinger born December 23, 1931, Harlen married Darlene Reuter on February 4, 1958 at St. James Church Le Mars. They have five boys: Larry, Michael, Gregory, David and Richard. The last account of Harlen reviewed on the internet was that he was 91 years old, possibly still living in Sioux City.

Source: Hawarden Independent (4-11-1963) Funeral services for John Engeldinger, 78, of Alton, father of Mrs. Vincent Muth and brother-in-law of Mrs. Celia Engeldinger, both of Hawarden, were held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Alton with burial in the church cemetery.
Mr. Engeldinger, a lifelong resident of Alton, died at his home there Thursday after suffering a heart attack. The rosary was recited in the parish chapel Friday evening.
Born April 26, 1885, near Alton, he married Philomena Biever there February 4, 1918. The couple farmed in the Alton area until their retirement to town seven years ago. Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Gorgen of Granville and Mrs. Muth of Hawarden; a son, Harley of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. George Jungers of Alton and Mrs. Joesph Joanning of California; a brother, Emil of Alton, and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. John (Philomena) Engeldinger, 88, of Alton died Tuesday in a nursing home in Sioux City after brief illness. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. The Rev. Thomas Hart officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mrs. Engeldinger, the former Philomena Biever, was born September 17, 1894 at Alton to Mr. and Mrs. John 9Helena Wolf) Biever. She was raised and educated in Alton. She married John Engeldinger February 4, 1918, at Alton. They farmed in the Alton area until retiring and moving into Alto in 1957. He died April 4, 1963. In 1964 she moved to Granville where she lived until 1979 when she moved to Casa De Paz in Sioux City. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America at Remsen.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Vincent (Ethelyn) Muth of Hawarden; one son, Harlen of Sioux City; one sister, Mrs. Thomas (Regina) Allen of Dell Rapids, S.D.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Maxine) Goergen; three brothers, Michael, Alois and Alphonse; and one sister, Mrs. Leo (Amelia) Schneider.
