Croatt, Nicholas 1861-1951 and Anna Jungers Family

This family story was taken from the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book of Alton IA 1883-1983 page 131. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Iowa Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Nicholas Croatt and Anna Jungers were married at St. Anthony’s church in Hospers on April 25 1887. After their marriage, they started farming near Granville, Iowa, and attended the prairie church located between Granville and Alton.

After a few years, the Croatts bought a farm two miles north of Hospers which they later sold, and settled two miles east of Hospers. That farm is still in the Croatt family, where one of their grandsons lives.

Their family consisted of nine children: John, Margaret, Edward, Philomena, Clara, Louis, Leo, Frances and Elizabeth.

The Croatts retired to Alton in 1921, and lived there for over 30 years. They both died at the age of 90 ¼ years. Four of their children are sill living: Edward, and Philomena Plathe of Madison, MN; Frances Pohlen of Alton; and Betty Van Boxtel of California.
