Jones, Joseph 1862-1954 & Sarah Frances Scott Family

This story was taken from pages 416-417 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Author unknown. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Joseph and Sarah Frances (Scott) Jones were married Apr. 10, 1884 in Sargraman Co., Il. Joe Jones came to Sioux Co. in 1892 and purchased the farm (Eagle Twp. Sec. 35) on Highway 10 where Daryl Schlumbohm now lives for $5.00 per acre. Sarah came later on the train, bringing the children, Ida, Daisy, and Effie. Ida remembered riding on the train a long time and she was 5 at that time. He also owned a farm west of the “homeplace,” which he later sold to Jesse Yates.

Sarah and Joe had 9 children: Clarence, Ida (Mrs. Clyde Wills), Daisy (Mrs. Floyd Bartlett), Effie (Mrs. Orlan Liston), Roy, Pearly, Arthur (Sam), William (Jim), and Ralph. All are deceased. Esther Jones, wife of Arthur, and Nellie Jones, wife of Clarence, are both living, Esther in Ireton and Nellie in Aberdeen, S.D.

Joe and Sarah Jones retired and moved to Ireton into the house now owned by Mark Degen, in 1912. Grandpa Jones was 50 years when he retired to town but visited his farm almost every day. Different sons and sons-in-law farmed with Grandpa on shares. Joe loved to play cards and walked up town every morning and afternoon and played cards at the local pool halls. Grandma Jones always complained of him wearing out his pockets with the paper clips. In later years he used a cane which had belonged to his grandfather and was more than 100 years old at that time. Grandma Jones was a very good cook and could make dinner in one skillet. Fried meat, fried potatoes, and fried cabbage. She made a pie for dinner almost every day, all on a cook stove. She loved flowers and had many flowers in the summer and a window full of plants in the winter. She also made many quilts. Daughters and daughters-in-law gathered many evenings or afternoons quilting.

Sarah and Joe were members of the Presbyterian Church and are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. One of the things the grandchildren remember were the large birthday parties they had for Grandpa’s and Grandma’s birthdays. Pot-luck dinners, with their granddaughter, Mrs. Emery Vlotho, making the birthday cakes as her birthday was the same day as Grandpa Jones. When he was 90 she made the cake in a large dishpan and put 90 candles on it and by the time they were all lit the cake started on fire. Grandma Jones died in 1947 at the age of 85, and Grandpa Jones died in 1954 at the age of 92. Sarah had been a resident of the Ireton area for 46 years and Joe for 63 years.
