Moser, Peter 1842-1926 & Elizabeth Lindenman Family

This story was taken from pages 436-437 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Peter and Elizabeth Lindenman Moser were born in Switzerland. They came to the U.S. at a different time, but both settled in Bates Co., Mo. Peter came to Missouri by way of Wisconsin in 1873. He had with him his first wife Maydalene Swiegard Moser and a son Charles. Elizabeth (Lindenman), his second wife, came direct to Missouri in 1878.

Peter and Elizabeth were married in 1879. The Moser family included: Frederick (1880); Albert (1881); William (1884); and Mary (1887). All were born in Bates or Vernon Counties, Mo.

The family came to Ireton, Sioux Co., Ia. in 1890 or thereabout, the Lindenmans coming for the second time. (The Lindenmans had come to LeMars, Plymouth Co. in 1884. They stayed two years and returned to Missouri. Only Emil remained for a while longer.)

Peter Moser first worked as a farm hand when he came to Ireton. It is said that he was one, if not the one that planted a grove of trees, south of Ireton, that came to be known as the “Horseshoe Grove”, it being planted in the shape of a horseshoe. (Ed. Note: This was located on the east side of Sec. 19 of Reading Twp. directly south of Ireton on K-30 on the west side of the road.)

Peter Moser purchased a farm west of Ireton in 1891. Here the family grew to adulthood. The Mosers continued to farm until they retired in 1906, renting the place to their youngest son, William. Upon the retirement of the Mosers, they purchased a home in Ireton, one block north from the public school building. Peter was restless and soon purchased some dairy animals and operated a milk route in Ireton until 1918.

Peter and Elizabeth sold their farm in 1917 for $200.00 an acre to Lynn Houlton. At the time, this was almost an unheard of amount for a farm. They soon sold their home and moved to San Diego to be with their daughter, Mary, and to enjoy sunny California. It is said that the Mosers raised the best strawberries in the community and Mrs. Moser had the name of having the first flock of Rhode Island Reds.

Peter and Elizabeth made Peter’s last visit to the community in 1925. Peter died in Feb. of 1926, his funeral held at the Luth. Church and burial at Ireton. Elizabeth returned to Ireton in 1935 and lived with her brother Jake Lindenman until her death in July of 1935. She is buried at Ireton.

Their children are:

Frederick Moser married Cora Shimer. They first farmed at Ireton, later purchased a farm at Windom, Mn., later carrying mail on a Rural Route for many years, and retiring there. They passed away in 1973.

Albert Moser married Marene Wills. They farmed west and NW of Ireton. In 1910 they purchased a farm near Merrill, Ia. They moved to Plankington, S.D. and then to Vermillion, S.D. Albert passed away Aug. 1972, Marene in Apr. 1975.

William Moser took over the “homeplace” until it was sold, then he rented a farm near Craig, Ia. In 1918, with brother Albert, he went to Plankington, S.D. and later to Platte, S.D. During Oct. of 1922 he was the victim of a gasoline explosion and died from the burns. He’s buried at Ireton. His widow continued living at Platte until the children were grown. She died in 1941.

Mary Moser, the daughter, married Hugo Kumstead, a civil engineer for the Northwestern Railroad Co. They met while Hugo was surveying for the branch line that ran from Hawarden to Sioux City. Hugo Kumstead died at an early middle age, leaving Mary with a son, Alfred. Mary, after some time married John Ackley. Mr. Ackley has passed away, but Mary Moser Kumstead Ackley was still living at San Diego, Ca. in 1979.

Leslie Wills Moser, son of Albert and Marene Wills Moser, was born in Sioux Co., Ia. on Apr. 7, 1904. He later met and married May Stocks. They had a son Bob, and a daughter Dianne. They lived at Ireton, the school year of 1933-34, when he taught high school classes in the Public School. He has retired after 40 years of teaching and lives in Rapid City, S.D.

Peter Moser from his first wife, Maydalene, had a son, Charles. Charles left home when the Mosers still lived in Missouri. Shortly after his father’s second marriage, he traveled west. His daughter, Mrs. Herbert Carlson writes that he struck it rich while panning for gold near Boise, Id. Charles found gold and wealth but it proved harder for him to keep than to find. Within a short time he was back seeking and prospecting. Fortunately near Hayfork, Ca. he found gold again. The claim is now owned by his daughter Bertha Carlson. His sons either were killed in logging accidents or died from early heart attacks.

Peter Moser had a brother Rudolph, who came to the U.S. in 1858. When Peter arrived in 1873 he attempted to find his brother but never succeeded. It is thought that Rudolph very likely had enlisted in the Civil War and became a war casualty.
