Hemmingson, Joseph J. 1860-1926 & Families

This story was taken from pages 400-401 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). Author is not named. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

Joseph J. Hemmingson and George Lande came to Sioux Co. in the spring of 1883 from Huxley, Ia. Each had a team and loaded wagon. They bought land 6½ miles northwest of Ireton, at a place which later became commonly known as Highland.

After starting his farm and preparing a first home, Joseph returned to Huxley in Dec. 1883 and married Betsy Richardson 1862-1888. They returned to Highland in the spring of 1884 to live. To this marriage a daughter, Anna (Mrs. Chas. Webert) was born in 1886. Betsy died in childbirth in 1888.

In 1889 Joseph returned to Huxley and married Bertha Lande 1859-1920. To this union was born nine children: Helen (Gunderson) in 1890, George in 1892, John in 1893, Christine (Gunderson) in 1895, Alfred in 1896, Emelie in 1898, Lillian (Hollister) in 1900, Myrtle (Ness) in 1903, and Amanda (Johnson) in 1906.

Between the years 1883 and 1889 two of Joseph’s brothers and two of his sisters along with their families joined him at the Highland community. As Highland grew, a need was felt for a church. Joseph donated a plot of land for a church and cemetery. A church was built in 1889 and named The Rock River Norwegian Lutheran Church. Charter members of the church included Joseph J. Knute and Oliver Hemmingson, George Lande, and Tom and Andrew Johnson. The first three named were brothers and the last three were brothers-in-law.

Joseph J. Hemmingson was one of the largest livestock feeders in the area at that time. He usually kept 50 head of stock cows and fed out about 100 head of cattle each year. He also raised approximately 200 head of hogs each year on his 320 acre farm. This was quite an operation for a time when everything was done by horse and “muscle” power.

When cattle were to be sold, they were driven on foot to a freight train in Ireton. This trip took about six hours. The cattle were loaded on cattle cars to be sent to Chicago. After the cattle were loaded, Joseph and other farmers, who were shippers, would have a big meal in one of the local restaurants. Later, they boarded the caboose of the cattle train and accompanied their beef to market.

In 1900 Joseph built a general store at the Highland community. Then followed several other businesses, including a windmill and pump shop operated by Knute Toft and a blacksmith shop, owned by Joseph and run by Nels Christenson. In 1905 a tornado destroyed the general store and the church building. This was a devastating blow to the small community. However, the people of the community set about the task of rebuilding. Church services were held in the school building a mile south until the new church was completed. A home delivery grocery service from house to house was started after the new grocery store was built.

In 1908 the first country telephone line was installed in the community and the central switchboard was located in Joseph Hemmingson’s home. It was the girls’ job to take care of the switchboard. John Vlotho, Sr. was the first telephone manager.

Not many years later, the store was again destroyed—this time by fire. Because of the coming of easier transportation and better roads, the Highland community, like many of its sister communities, died out and the people traveled to larger towns for shopping, school, and church.

Having no long a need for the church, it was torn down by Alfred Hemmingson, Joseph J.’s son, in the summer of 1935. Today there are 27 graves remaining at the Highland Cemetery. Care of the cemetery is supervised by Alfred Hemmingson, who lives in Ireton.

Her going has left in the years of those who mourn a scar that even time cannot wholly efface.
