Ganzeveld, Peter 1867-1931 and Sadie Meines Family
This story was taken from page 394 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.
Both Peter Ganzeveld and his wife Sadie (Meines) were born in the Netherlands, he in 1867 and she in 1879, and both came to America as young adults. They were married in Grand Rapids, Mi. on May 30, 1905.
In Oct. of 1918, the Peter Ganzevelds and nine of their sixteen children moved to Iowa from a large dairy just outside Grand Rapids, Mi. after WWI took three of the brothers from home. They settled in the town of Ireton for the winter months, where others of their families were living.
The following spring the family moved to the Norman Barker farm, and the children walked a mile and a half to school. They traded in Craig at LeRoy Edwards store for groceries, “driving all the way to Ireton” for shoes or clothing. In spring, summer, and fall they drove the ten miles to the Christian Reformed Church at Ireton in an open surrey, an hours trip. Sadie would throw a white sheet around her shoulders to protect her Sunday black dress from the dust or from turning green from the sun, as her husband’s black suit had. In the winter they rode in a bobsled, with straw and a seat on the floor for mother and the small children. The older children would get out and walk up the hills if their feet got cold, to stir up their blood.
The next year they rented a farm west of Ireton, called Hilltop Farm, and the children drove “Old Charlie” in front of the buckboard buggy to the Christian School, but the winter cold caused a transfer to the local Hilltop School the next year. Blanche Cummins, Pauline Lundeen, and the dedicated Minnie Green were their teachers.
Irene and Helen would walk the seven miles down and back to the McNally store for supplies, with “a whole nickel” to spend for ice cream or pop, after their hot walk. As a treat, their Uncle Klass Meines would drive out to their farm and take his sister, Gertrude and Helen to Ireton to catch the nine A.M. train for Orange City to visit their grandparents, returning on the six o’clock train.
In May of 1922 Harold was born, weighing only 2˝ pounds. With only his mother’s tender care and no incubator, he grew to 7 pounds and lived 4 months. It was difficult to keep him warm, even in the midst of summer.
In Oct. of 1925 their beloved Mother Sadie died very suddenly of a brain tumor, and is buried in the Ireton Cemetery. Peter Ganzeveld died in 1931 in Mich., where he is buried.
The children who lived in this area are: William; Henry; Clarence who married Annie Koning; George, who married Louise Pogge; Alice (Mrs. Brian Van Wyhe); Anne (Mrs Ed Lockhorst); Irene , (Mrs. Melvin Sanderson); Gertrude (Mrs. Peter Dieleman); Helen (Mrs. Peter Van Wyhe); and Minnie, called “Tootie” (Mrs. Philip Roberts) the only one born in Iowa, on the Hilltop Farm.

OBITUARY OF PETER GANZEVELD
Peter Ganzeveld Dies in Michigan
Children living here received word of the death of their father, Peter Ganzeveld, which took place in a home for the aged at Grand Rapids, Mich., early Monday morning [Oct. 12]. He had suffered from a stroke some time ago and never fully recovered and it is thought another stroke overtook him and brought on death. He had reached the age of 62 years and is the father of fourteen living children, several of whom are living near Ireton. Mrs. Peter Van Wyhe and Mrs. Bryan Van Wyhe are two of the daughters. The deceased lived near Ireton many years, most of the time farming. He was a man of character, Christian principles and ideals, and many friends regret his passing and extend sympathy to the sorrowing wife and children.

DEATH CAME VERY SUDDENLY
Mrs. Peter Ganzeveld Passed Away Saturday Morning
Was Taken Sick Friday Night While Doing Chores and Died at 5 O'clock the Next Morning
Mrs. Peter Ganzeveld, who has resided with her family on a farm, five miles east of Hawarden, for the past five years, died very suddenly Saturday morning [Oct. 31]. She had been subject to some heart trouble but this ailment had not interfered with her customary household duties and she had attended to her work as usual all during the week and on the day preceding her death, besides milking two cows Friday evening. It was while she was assisting with the evening chores that she was seized with a severe headache and she took some headache tablets and decided to retire for the night. The pain grew steadily worse, however, and about ten o'clock Friday night she lapsed into unconsciousness from which she did not recover, passing away about 5 o'clock Saturday morning. A physician was summoned soon after she became unconscious but could hold out little hope for her recovery from the first. It is believed that her death was due to an abcess on the brain.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home, followed by services at the Christian Reformed church at Ireton, conducted by Rev. Wm. Terpsma, pastor of the Ireton church. Interment was made in the Ireton cemetery.
Mrs. Ganzeveld was 45 years of age and came with her family to this locality five years ago from Grand Rapids, Mich. Besides her husband she is survived by a large family, her children and step-children numbering sixteen. Sincere sympathy goes out to the members of the grief stricken family.
