Eilts, Hillert 1849-1930 and Maria Trinka Bohlken Family

This story was taken from page 379 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Eilt Hillert Eilts was born on Aug. 12, 1849 in Germany (possibly Hanover). At the age of 19 he came to America, settling in Jones Co. for three years. In the early 1870’s he pushed west to Sioux Co., where he was one of the pioneers in settlement. In 1874 he bought 160 acres of “Railroad Land” (that is, land that was not available for homestead, which had been set aside by the Government for the railroads to sell, to defray the cost of railroad development), paying $600.00 for the NW¼ of Sec. 27, Reading Twp. and returned to Jones Co. for his bride, Marie Bohlken.

Marie Trinka (Bohlken) Eilts had been born on Aug. 19, 1851 in Repholt Oatfr. Germany, one of five children of William and Gebke (Kliehauer) Bohlken. Her brothers Gerrit and Siefke Bohlken also came to America to make a new life, with Marie arriving in 1873,

After their marriage on April 12, 1874, Hillert and Marie settled down in a one room house on the farm which Hillert farmed for a total of 39 years. Over the years they added many rooms to accommodate their family of thirteen children. Hillert also built a 60 x 80 foot barn, still standing and in good shape, of native cottonwood held together with wooden pegs rather than nails, to prevent wood rot.

When they retired to Le Mars in 1912 their sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren continued to own and farm the land through the 1970’s, when it became an “Iowa Century Farm.”

Marie Eilts died in Le Mars on April 26, 1921, and E.H. continued to live in Le Mars until his death on April 30, 1930, at the age of 81. Both are buried in St. John’s Cemetery, rural Ireton.
