Goodmanson, Bert T. 1877-1940 & Theressa Fannie Ehlers family

This story was taken from pages 393-394 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

About 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Bert T. Goodmanson moved from Minn. to Iowa. The first house they stopped at was Mrs. Goodmanson’s parents—Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers. Mrs. Goodmanson, Theressa was the eldest daughter of the Ehler’s.

Mr. and Mrs. George Ehlers had moved to Ireton about 1902 where Mr. Ehlers worked for Riter Imp. Co. for many years.

Mrs. George Ehlers (Fannie G. Waken) passed away Feb. 18, 1921 at the age of 58 years. She was born at Dillon, Marshall Twp. Ia. Jan. 7, 1863.

Bert Theodore Goodmanson, son of Lars and Emma Goodmanson, was born in Hardin Co. on July 22, 1877 and died in Ireton on Feb. 20, 1940 after a two year illness.

On Apr. 30, 1902 he was married to Theressa Fannie Ehlers at Paullina. For some years they farmed in this vicinity, then moved to town. Bert operated the dray service in Craig while Theressa managed the hotel and café. They were members of the Presbyterian Church.

They were parents of four sons: Ernest and Lewis of Ireton, Alfred of Exira, and Bernard. One daughter, Mrs. George (Clara) Schouten of Rock Valley.

After two more farm residences and two years in Craig, they moved to Ireton in 1918.

Mr. Goodmanson passed away Feb. 1940. Mrs. Goodmanson passed away in 1961. Three sons and the daughter passed away—Alfred-Jan. 1969, Bernard-June 1969, Ernest in 1980 and Clara- May-1970.

Bert married 30 Apr 1902 Paullina IA to Thresa Fannie Elhers.

Thresa Fannie Ehlers was born Mar 1882 Iowa died 1961 Ireton Iowa. Her parents were George H. Ehlers 1860-1940 and Fannie G. Waken 1863-1921

1. Ernest Goodmanson born 3 Jan 1903 Paullina IA died July 1980 July 10, 1980 Hawarden Independent Ernest F. Goodmanson, 77, a former Cherokee businessman, died Saturday, July 5 in a hospital after a long illness. Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Methodist Church at Ireton. The Rev. Marion Bloodworth officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at lreton.
Find A Grave lists Ernest Floyd Goodmanson as born 3 Jan 1903 Paulina IA and died Jul 1980 buried at Ireton IA. Wife was Helen Lucile Goodmanson. Children were Kenneth Allen Goodmanson; Lyle E. Goodmanson; Larry Lewis Goodmanson and Norman J. Van Oosbree.

2. Clara Goodmanson Born: May 31, 1904 Died: May 28, 1970 Rock Valley IA
Mrs. Schouten lived in Sunnyvale CA in Source: Sioux Center News (6-4-1970)
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Rock Valley at 1 p. m. June 1 for Mrs. George Schouten, 65, of Rock Valley, who died May 28 at her home in Rock Valley following a brief illness. Services were conducted by the Reverend William E. Ballard and burial was made in Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley. Mrs. Schouten, the former Clara Goodmanson, was born at Graceville, Minnesota, May 31, 1904, daughter of Bert and Thressa (Ehlers) Schouten. She was married to George Schouten January 10, 1922, at Orange City. Survivors include the widower; two sons, Wallace of Santa Clara, California, and Clayton of Doon; two brothers, Ernest and Lewis of Ireton; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

3. Lewis Goodmanson born Jun 15, 1907 Graig IA, died Dec 14, 1985 buried Ireton IA. From the Thursday, December 19, 1985 Hawarden Independent:
Lewis A. Goodmanson, 78, of Ireton, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 1985, in a Sioux City Hospital.
Services were at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton. The Rev. Paul Sieveking officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery under direction of Dow Funeral Home, Ireton. Pallbearers were Edward Kading, Vernon Eilts, Lawrence Eilts, Gerald Juffer, Edwin Ten Napel and Melvin Torwelle. Mr. Goodmanson was born June 15, 1907, in Craig and moved to Ireton in 1918. He married Helen Jones March 13,1947, at Luverne, MN. He operated the Goodmanson Bottle Gas and Appliance Store and also did harness repair. He operated the Pastime Tavern in Ireton for 19 1/2 years, retiring in 1969. Mr. Goodmanson was a veteran of World War II and was an active member of the Ireton American Legion Post, He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jerry of Ireton and Alan of Fremont, NE, and two grandchildren.
Poster's note: According to his parents' obituaries on this site, Lewis (known as "Lewie" in Ireton) was the son of Theresa (Ehlers) and Bert T. Goodmanson.

HOLD SERVICES FOR ALFRED GOODMANSON
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a. m. Monday morning for Alfred Goodmanson of Harlan, Iowa, who died of a heart attack. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Vera; one son, Dean; two grandchildren; three brothers, Louis and Ernest of Ireton and Bernard of Hawarden, and one sister, Mrs. George (Clara) Schouton, of Rock Valley. Relatives attending the funeral services included Mr. and Mrs. Louis Goodmanson and son, Allen, and Mrs. Florence Ehlers of Ireton, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Goodmanson of Hawarden, Mr. and Mrs. George Schoulton of Rock Valley; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Goodmanson of Paullina; Ernest Goodmanson, and Dr. and Mrs. Fred Asher of Cherokee.
Poster's note: According to census information on ancestry.com, Mr. Goodmanson was born about 1906, the son of Theresa (Ehlers) and Bert Goodmanson. According to Find-A-Grave, he was born in 1906, died in 1969 and is buried in the Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, Iowa

5. Bernard Goodmanson Source: Hawarden Independent (6-12-1969)
Birth: March 15, 1911 Death: June 9, 1969
Bernard E. (Bernie) Goodmanson, 58, of rural Hawarden passed away at a Sioux City Hospital Monday. His funeral will be held tomorrow, Friday, June 13, at the Associated Church in Hawarden at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Herbert Young officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery under the direction of Dow Funeral Home.
Goodmanson, a West Sioux school bus driver for 10 years, was born March 15, 1911, to Bert and Thressa (Ehlers) in Ireton. He married Hazel Younie March 9, 1947, in Alton. The couple moved to a farm near Hawarden in 1947. He was a member of the Associated Church of Hawarden.
Besides his widow he is survived by a daughter, Sue, at home; two brothers, Ernest and Louis of Ireton, and a sister, Mrs. George Schouten of Rock Valley.

6. Clara Goodmanson Born: May 31, 1904 Died: May 28, 1970

Bert Goodmanson Died Tuesday
B T. Goodmanson passed away at his home in Ireton at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon following an illness of two years. He was taken to Iowa City where an operation was performed which seemed to relieve him from the ravages of the dread disease, cancer, only to come back and make new ravages on his strength and vitality. He suffered much but in it all showed great patience and fortitude until death relieved him.
Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church Friday afternoon with Rev. Seibert and Rev. Albert in charge.
Bert Theodore Goodmanson, son of Lars and Ellen Goodmanson, was born in Hardin county, Iowa, July 22, 1877. He was married to Theresa Fanny Ehlers at Paullina April 30,1902. They came to Ireton in 1905 and with the exception of a few years when they lived at Craig, they have since resided in and near Ireton. He farmed for many years and later came to town. While living in Ireton he worked at different jobs and for several years was marshal and street commissioner. He was a member of the I. O. 0. P. Lodge.
He was the father of four sons, E. E. and Lewis of Ireton, Alfred of Exira, Iowa, and Bernard of North Platte, Neb., and one daughter, Mrs. George Schouten of Rock Valley. There are a number of grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers, George of Lennox, S. D.; Ed of Morristown, S. D.; Lewis of Paullina; Henry of Drain, Ore., and four sisters, Mrs. John Hankanson of Morristown, S. D.; Mrs. J. O. Hegge of Corvallis, Mont., and Mrs. Ross Stebbins and Mrs. Murray Stebbins of Helena, Mont.

Mrs. Goodmanson Dies at Age 79;Rites at Irenton
Funeral services for Mrs Theresa Goodmanson, 79, who died at the hospital here Thursday following a long illness, were held at the Satterlee Funeral home at Irenton at 1:30 Monday afternoon an at 2 o'clock at St. Paul's Lutheran church there. Burial was at Pleasant Hill cemetery at Ireton.
Mrs.Goodmanson, mother of Bernard Goodmanson of Rural Hawarden was born March 26, 1882, at Paulina and was married there, April 30, 1902. They farmed in that vicinity until they moved to Ireton about 1915. Mr. Bert T. Goodmanson died in 1940.
A charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran Ladies Aid society, Mrs. Goodmanson was also a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Ireton.
Survivors include four sons, Ernest and Lewis, both of Ireton, Alfred of Harlan, Iowa and Bernard of Hawarden; a daughter, Mrs.Clara Schouten of Sunnyvale, Calif.; Three brothers, Harry Ehlers of Le Mars, Ernest Ehlers of Modesto, Calif, and Carl Ehlers of Ireton; three sisters, Mrs. Alex (Laura) Schwiderski of San Luis Obispo, Calif.,Mrs. Molly Morrison of Sioux City and Mrs. Lewis Goodmanson of Paulina; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
