De Young, Roel 1858-1944 and Grietje Nieuwenhof Family
The biography of the Roel De Young family was put together from various sources from the local archives as cited by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Noticeably there are many discrepancies in spellings, dates and places from one record to another. The submitter has posted the information as found in the cited record.
RESEARCH NOTES: (From a family history on Ancestry.com submitted by other than this submitter)
Roel De Young was born 23 March 1858 South Holland, Cook, Illinois and died 12 Apr 1944 Rock Valley Sioux Iowa. He was the son of Arie de Jong born 7 Sep 1823 Noordeloos, Zuid Holland Netherlands died 3 Feb 1903 South Holland, Cook, IL and Anna Van Vuren born 21 Mar 1822 Gorinshem, Zuid Holland Netherlands died 3 May 1887 South Holland, Cook, IL. Arie and Anna were married 3 Feb 1848 in South Holland, Cook, Illinois. Arie De Jong arrived in New York 27 Apr 1847 recorded in the Baltimore, Passenger and Immigration lists. He had joined the several Religious Seceders that had come the same time that Rev.Van Raalte came to the Holland Michigan area.
Roel De Young married 31 Mar 1881 at South Holland IL to Grietje ‘Maggie’ Nieuwenhof born 6 Jul 1863 Netherlands and died 6 Oct 1920 Rock Valley IA. She was the daughter of Jacob Nieuwenhof born 2 Nov 1836 died 2 Jun 1907 Orange City IA and Trientje Siebe Sieben born 1 Oct 1840 Texel, North Holland and died 24 Oct 1884 Orange City, Iowa.
During the period of time the family was living in Capel Township, Roel De Young had a general store and a peddle wagon stocked with supplies needed by the settlers. He was instrumental in the early progression of the town of Middleburg. Excerpt from the Book ‘A Century of Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church 1885-1985; as the church expanded, a village arose. First it was just the parsonage. Then in 1892, Roel De Jong established a general store and organized a weekly grocery route throughout the territory. In the next few years, the good fortune of the De Jong Store attracted other businesses to Middleburg. … A post office was then built in this place called Middleburg with Roel de Jong as postmaster. At first the mail was received twice a week and later three times a week.
CENSUS RECORDS - Census takers often didn’t understand the Dutch immigrants, therefore there are errors in the results. Also children were usually sent out to work at young ages and therefore were not included in the family group in that particular census.
1850 Census of Thornton, Cook, Illinois, Ara Deyoung age 27 born about 1823 Holland, a farmer, wife Hannah Deyoung age 29? born abt 1821 Holland – Child Ketty Deyoung, female born about 1849, Illinois. (this Ketty born 1849 must be Geertje DeJong born 1849)
1860 Census of Thornton, Cook, Illinois Ary Deyoung age 40 born abt 1820 Holland, Post Office Thornton Station, Dook IL. Farmer, personal value 400, real estate 1300, wife Anna age 31 born about 1829 Holland, Children – Henry Deyoung (no age he was born 1857), Peter Deyoung abt 6 mo. In a family report on the Arie De Jong family (father of Roel) it indicates that their was a Roel DeYoung born 1858, and a Pieter DeYoung born 1860. So evidently Roel born 1858 was skipped in the 1860 census.
1870 Census of Thornton, Cook, Illinois Arie Deyong age 47 born abt 1823 Holland living in Thornton, Cook, Illinois, post office South Holland, farmer, personal value 800, realestate 3200, wife Anna Deyong age 48, children Margaret Deyong age 14 born IL, Rose Deyong born 1858 IL. Rose is marked as female. (Possibly an error by the enumerator of the census in the pronouncation of the name and assumption this was Rose, this entry most likely is Roel)
1880 Census of Thornton, Cook, Illinois had Reuhl De Young age 22 born about 1858 in Illinois, lived at Thornton, Cook, Illinois, son, single, father Arie De Young 57 yrs , mother Annie De Young 58 yrs, son Reuhl De Young 22.

From the Rock Valley Bee, October 8, 1920:
DEATH OF MRS. R. DEYOUNG
Mrs. R. DeYoung died at her home in Rock Valley Wednesday evening after a long and lingering illness with paralysis. About nine years ago she was stricken with this dread disease and she has been an invalid since that time. For the past three years she has been unable to speak.
The subject of this sketch was born in Holland, July 6, 1863, and was at the time of her death fifty-seven years and three months old. At the age of four years, she came with her parents to this country. The family settled at South Holland, Illinois, where she received her education and grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to R. De Young and she and her husband moved to Sioux County about thirty-five years ago. They resided at Sioux Center, Orange City, Middleburg, and for the past four years at Rock Valley.
Besides her husband and other relatives she leaves to mourn eight children, the youngest about fourteen years old. She was a woman of good Christian character and bore her long years of sickness patiently. The bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of many friends in their great sorrow. At this writing arrangements for the funeral have not been completed.
From the Alton Democrat, October 16, 1920: Rock Valley news: Mrs. Grietje DeYoung (nee Nieuwenhof), wife of our worthy townsman, R. DeYoung, was born in Holland, July 6, 1863, and died at her home in Rock Valley of paralysis on Oct. 6, 1920, at the age of 57 years and three months.
The deceased when of tender years emigrated with her parents to America and located at South Holland, Ill., where she spent the years of her youth and early girlhood, and as she grew to womanhood she acquired a cheerful and kindly disposition that designated all the years of her life. On March 31, 1881, she married R. DeYoung at South Holland, Ill., and found in him a congenial companion, to whom she was faithful and devoted in the most extensive meaning of these terms. During the years that spanned their marital associations they lived in happy companionship, although she was afflicted for nine years, and five of those years she could not speak, yet that affectionate devotion was not lessened in the slightest degree.
She was the mother of eight children, three girls and five boys, namely: Mrs. Henry Vander Wilt, Mrs. M. Bomgaars, and Mrs. Bert Ver Steeg of Middleburg, Edward of Oregon, Martin of Andover, S.Dak., Jake, Herman and John, who were present to pay the last tribute of respect to a departed mother, except Edward, who could not be present due to unavoidable circumstances.
After four years of their marriage they moved to Iowa in 1885 and located at Sioux Center, where they resided till 1889, when her husband engaged in the mercantile business at Middleburg. In 1906[?] her husband disposed of his business interests at Middleburg, and moved to Orange City, and in 1916 they moved to Rock Valley where she continuously resided till her passing. She was a devout member of the Reformed church, and lived an exemplary and consistent Christian life.
Funeral services were conducted at the Reformed church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the presence of many sympathizing neighbors and friends, by the pastor Rev. H. Colenbrander, after which her remains were consigned to the last home of man in Valley View cemetery. She leaves a husband and children and five sisters and two brothers to mourn her departure. The bereaved have the sympathy of their many friends in their hour of extreme sorrow.
