Gunnink, Frans 1863-1940 and Hendrikje De Groot Family

The BIOS of the Frans or Franz Gunnink Family was gathered from various sources as cited and transcribed by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

Hull Centennial Book 1873-1973 page 42, includes a photo at the end of the family story.

Mr. Franz Gunnink 1863-1940 was married in 1885 to Hendrikje De Grroot 1863-1948. they came to the Middleburg area in 1892, then moved southeast of Hull. Mr. Gunnink served as mayor of Hull during the 20s. They were the parents of six children: Henry, Nellie (Mrs. W. Vander Wilt) Hattie (Mrs. J. Calsbeek), John, William, and Frank.

Frans Jan Gunnink was born 16 Jul 1863 Kampereiland, Overijssel, Netherlands and died 1 Apr 1940 Hull, Sioux, Iowa. He was the son of Jan Gunnink 1834-1896 and Arendje van Spijker 1838-1870. Frans married Hendrikje De Groot 24 Dec 1885 at Kampen Overijssel. Hendrikje de Groot was born 6 Oct 1863 at Kampen OV to Hendrik de Groot and Niesjen Post. They were the parents of nine children three of whom died in infancy.

2. HENRY GUNNINK born 9 July 1888 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands and died Jan 11, 1958 Edgerton, Pipestone County, MN. He was married to Gertie Koerselman 1888-1875. Their children were Frank H. Gunnink 1911-1992;, Gerrit Henry Gunnink 1914-2000; and Harold H. Gunnink 1920-1997.

3. NELLIE GUNNINK born 5 Jun 1890 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands and died 27 Jul 1962 at Sheldon Iowa. She married William J. Vander Wilt on 24 Dec 1906 Sioux county IA. Obituary - Sioux Center News, August 9, 1962(maybe August 4, 1962) Funeral services were held Monday, July 30, from the Kraai Funeral Chapel and First Reformed Church in Hull for Mrs. Wm. Vander Wilt, 72, who passed away at the Sheldon hospital Friday, July 27. The Rev. N. Rozeboom officiated. Surviving are her husband, one son, John Vander Wilt of Ruthton, MN; six daughters Henrietta (Mrs. Ed. Joustra) of Rock Valley; Sophia (Mrs. Henry J. Koele) of Whitewater, MN; Frances (Mrs. Frances Vander Berg) of Hull; Adrianna (Mrs. Charley Peacock) of Pensacola, FL; Miss Arnetta Vander Wilt at home and Carol (Mrs. Melvin Kruizenga) of Darlen, Wis; 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Hattie Calsbeek, of Hull; three brothers, John Gunnink of Clinton, Wis; Wm. Gunnink of Hull and Frank Gunnink of Montedello, CA.

HATTIE GUNNINK born 9 Jun 1892 Middleburg Iowa and died Jul 1970 at Hull Iowa Obituary - Sioux County Index August 6, 1970 Hattie Calsbeek (nee Gunnlnk) passed away at the Sioux Center Community Hospital, July 28, 1970. Funeral Services for Hattie Calsbeek were held Thursday, July 30, 1970 at the First Reformed Church at Hull, Iowa. Rev. Paul Vander Woude officiated and burial was at the Hope Cemetery at Hull, Iowa. Hattie Calsbeek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franz Gunnink was born June 9,1892 at Middleburg, Iowa where she spent her young life. She was married December 19, 1916 to John Calsbeek, who preceded her in death May, 1946. Her life was spent in and around Hull, Iowa. To this union three children were born namely, Gerald F, from Sioux Center, Iowa ; Henrietta (Mrs. Willis Brouwer), Hull, lowa and Franklin J. from Seattle, Washington. She was a very active member of the First Reformed Church as a former Sunday School teacher and member of the Guild for Christian Service. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She leaves to mourn her passing her three children, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren; three brothers, John Gunnlnk of Clinton, Wisconsin, Wm. Gunnlnk of Hull, lowa and Frank Gunnlnk of Healdsburg, California; and a host of relatives and friends.

5. JOHN GUNNINK born 25 July 1894 Hull, Iowa died 28 Jul 1976 Clinton, Rock, Wisconsin. John married Marie Koele 1892-1972 on 11 Feb 1915 Sioux County IA. Listed were three children – Harriet Frances Gunnink 1917-2011; Harold Henry Gunnink 1920-2001; and Harvey Franklin Gunnink 1920-2012.

6. INFANT GUNNINK born 1896 died 1896 Sioux County IA.

7. JAN WILLEM ‘WILLIAM’ GUNNINK born 29 Oct 1898 Hull Iowa and died 17 Oct 1972 Hull Iowa. Obituary - Sioux County Index Hull Nov 9, 1972 William Gunnink was born on October 29, 1898 at Middleburg, Iowa and passed away on October 27,1972 at the Sheldon hospital after a lingering illness. On January 10, 1921, he married Winnie Rikkers, who survives him, with their children: Richard and Etta of Fremont, Nebraska; Harry and Bette of Phoenix, Arizona; Ruby and Conway of Flat River, Missouri; Elwin and Mildred of Mankato, Minnesota; Frank and Darlene of Sioux City, Iowa; Norman and Esther of Boone, Iowa, also 27 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Esther, one son-in-law and one grandson, Douglas Gunnink, his parents, a brother, Henry, and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Calsbeek and Mrs. Wm. J. Vander Wilt. Two brothers survive him, Mr. John Gunnink of Clinton, Wisconsin and Frank and Gertrude of Healdsburg, California. Bill lived in Hull for the past 45 years and was employed by the Coop Gas and Oil Co. as a tank man for 17 years. During that time, he was a fireman on the Hull fire dept.

8. FRANK GUNNINK born 26 Sep 1903 Hull, Iowa died 25 Sep 1976 Sonoma, Californina. Frank Gunnink was born 26 Sep 1903 Capel Township, Sioux County IA and died 25 Sep 1976 Healdsburg, Sonoma, California. He married Gertrude Van De Weerd born 1906 on 14 Jan 1925 at Hull Iowa. Children listed as ‘private’ on the ancestry.com family report.

OBITUARY of Franz Gunnink 1863-1940
Source: Sioux County Capital (2-22-1940) Born: July 16, 1863 Died: February 15, 1940. Franz Gunnink was born on July 16, 1863 and died at Hull, Iowa on February 15, 1940 at the age of 76 years and 7 months. He was married on December 24, 1885 to Hendrikje De Groot. In 1893 they came to the United States and settled on a farm southeast of Hull. In 1910 they moved to a farm two miles southeast of Hull where they resided since. To this union nine children were born, three dying in infancy. The living children are Henry of Edgerton, Minnesota; Nellie, Mrs. W.J. Vander Wilt, Hattie, Mrs. John Calsbeek of Hull; John of Lake View, South Dakota; William of Hull and Frank of Rock Valley, Iowa. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Gunnink has always been active in church and community service. He served as an Elder in the First Reformed Church for nearly forty years and always showed great interest in the welfare of the church. He was elected mayor of the town of Hull in 1922 and served until 1930. He was elected again in 1934 and served until 1936. He was always highly respected and was known as a man of integrity and foresight. The funeral was held in the First Reformed Church at 1:30 o’clock Monday February 19 with Reverend R.A. Jager and G.H. Douwstra officiating.

Source: Alton Democrat (3-1-1918) Born: October 6, 1863 Died: February 26, 1918 Mrs. Hendrikje Gunnink of Hull died Thursday, February 26, at the age of 87. Funeral services were held Monday in Hull in the William Vander Wilt home and in the First Reformed Church, Reverend William De Jong officiating. Mrs. Gunnink, formerly Miss Hendrikje De Groot was born in the Netherlands October 6, 1863. She was married in 1886 to Franz Gunnink. Six Children were born to them: Henry of Edgerton, Minnesota; Nell, Mrs. William Vander Wilt of Hull; Mrs. Hattie Calsbeek of Hull; John of Jamesville, Wisconsin; William of Hull; and Frank of Los Angeles. Her husband died in 1940. Mrs. Gunnink’s health had been failing for some time.
