Day, Edwin R. 1847-1921 and Adelia Peebles Family

This story was taken from page 372 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg

Edwin R. Day, son of D. C. and Mary (Bryant) Day, was born in Greene, Co., Wisconsin, on July 2, 1847, the second child of a family of 4 sons and two daughters.

He came to Reading Twp., Sioux Co. in early 1871 and established his homestead on Sec. 28, five miles SE of Ireton. Later that year, he returned to Wisconsin to marry his childhood sweetheart, Adelia Peebles. He walked from Ireton to Des Moines by checking his compass and also the government survey stakes along the way. At Des Moines, he met his brother and together they traveled on to Greene Co. He and Adelia were married on Aug. 6, 1871 at York, WI. at the home of the bride’s parents. They returned to Sioux Co. and set up housekeeping by building a house. One of Adelia’s brothers homesteaded next to them, so they built their houses next to each other, each on the edge of their own claim, with a closed passage way between.

They weathered many hardships along with the other early settlers, of severe winters, grasshoppers, Indians and gypsies. The Indians frequently came through the trail near their home.

Adelia Peebles Day was born Dec. 18, 1851, one of 14 children to Philander and Hannah C. Hurlburt Peebles.

Adelia and Edwin were the parents of 14 children, 5 of which died at birth or early youth. They are buried in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

The Day’s remained on the same farm southeast of Ireton until he retired and moved into Ireton in 1907. They settled on the West edge of town in the house which was later sold to a nephew, L. D. Satterlee and used as his funeral home.

Edwin passed away on Mar. 10, 1921. He had been in poor health for some time, had undergone several operations and had been to Rochester, Mn. a month earlier to consult a physician. Adelia Day passed away on Mar. 24, 1939, at her home in Ireton.

Children of Adelia and Edwin were Jasper of Yakima, Wa., Eva of this vicinity, George of Washington, James of Utah, Flora (Bushby) of Struble, Ross of LeMars, Daisy (King) of Sioux City, Delbert of this vicinity, Robert of Redwood Falls, Mn.

All have passed away with Eva living to the age of 94 and Delbert both passing away in 1974.

OBITUARY OF ADELIA DAY
Hawarden Independent March 30, 1939
Again we are chronicling the passing of a will beloved citizen of Ireton and community, one who went many years beyond live proverbial three score years and ten. In the passing of Mrs. Adelia Day, Ireton has lost its oldest resident. Coming here in the early 70's she saw and experienced the raw prairies and shanties of habitation making the way to the beautiful farms with their splendid homes. Being the mother of a large family of children, she also realized in those pioneer years what it meant to provide, to care, to plan and to realize. Always a woman who loved her home and her loved ones; She lived to see her children grow up and to rear, children of their own. Quiet but deeply interested in everything good, she made and kept friends who are deeply saddened by her passing.
Adelia Peebles, daughter of Philander and Hannah Peebles, was born Dec. 18, 1851, in Green county; Wis., and passed away at her home early last Friday morning, March 24th, near the hour of 5 o'clock. She had been quite ill for three weeks but those about her did not realize that she was so near the parting, which came without a struggle, peacefully entering the eternal sleep. She had reached the ripe age of 87 years, 3 months and 6 days. On August 6, 1871, she was united in marriage with Edwin R. Day and shortly after their wedding they started for Sioux county in a. covered wagon and homesteaded southeast of what is now Ireton.
She suffered the many hardships of pioneer life, but she had the joy and realization of seeing the country develop from wild prairie to well organized and prosperous civilization. Leaving the farm for a more quiet life they came to Ireton about 25 years ago and this has been her home ever since. Her husband passed away March 10, 1921. Those who are left to mourn her passing include nine children, Jasper W., Yakima, Wash.; Eva M. of Ireton; James G. of Salt Lake City, Utah; Geo. W. of Auburn, ash.; Flora A. Bushby, Struble; Ross B., LeMars; Daisy P. King, Sioux City; Delbert E., Ireton; Robert P., Redwood Falls, Minn. There are 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, three brothers and one sister, who also survive her.

The large church was filled with relatives, friends and neighbors, who came to pay a last tribute to the one gone on. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The pall bearers were Roger Grau, John Voltho Jr., Harry Sewick, William Taylor, Gerrit Juffer and Earl Wells. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Schuette, W. F. Brown and Mrs. Stanley Hooper, with Mrs. Arthur Bartlett at the piano sang several favored hymns of the deceased.
Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery beside the grave of her husband. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Leet Peebles, a brother, of Lake, City, Iowa; Murry, Charles and Melvin Peebles, Lake City; Mrs. Ella Voverka and Miss Oaleta Nicolson, LeMars.
