This biography of Harm Vander Maten family was gathered from various sources as cited and prepared by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Harm ‘Herman’ Vander Maten was born 7 Oct 1834 Oldebroek, Gelderland Netherlands and died 8 Feb 1920 Boyden, Sioux, Iowa. He was the son of Frank Van der Maaten 1791-1859 and Marigje van de Kamp 1800-1890. His first marriage was to Marrigje Pruim born 1840 died 12 Jan 1863 in the Netherlands. They had one son, Frank Vander Maten born 1862

He was married 27 Apr 1899 Oldebroek Gelderland, Netherlands to Lubbigje van der Maten. Lubbigje van der Maten was born 14 Dec 1840 Oldebroek, Gelderland, Netherlands and died 4 May 1897 Boyden, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frank Jansz van der Maaten 1789-1860 and Gerrigje Alberts Klijn ‘Klein’ 1802-1877.

IMMIGRATION: Herman Van der Maten came to America with his second wife, Lubbigje Vander Maten, who was a distant relative of him and a sister of his brother Willem’s first wife. They came to Sioux County 1885 and lived on a farm four miles south of Boyden. Confirmed by submitter, found Herman VanderMaten age 51 a carpenter, Aalt. Beert. Frank, Gerrit, Jacob, Jan, Janna, Merrigje, and Lubbigje arrived Apr 25, 1885 New York , came from Kamperveen, Overijssel, Netherlands, port of departure Amsterdam, Ship name Edam, traveled steerage.

The Vander Maten family was quite involved in the growing town and church life of Middleburg and set up a general store in 1892 and a grocery wagon truck to supply area farmers with their needs.

CHILDREN - Frank #1 is of the first wife and rest are from Lubbigje.

1. FRANK VANDER MATEN 1861-1933 From the Alton Democrat, September 15, 1933: Boyden Citizen Passes Beyond. Frank Vander Maaten, Sr., of Boyden died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. J. Van Es near Newkirk on Sept. 12, at the age of 71 years, 10 months. He was born in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands, and married in 1886 Miss Willempje uit de Flesch. In 1900 they came to America and settled on a farm near Boyden. Six children, Herman, John, Mary (Mrs. E. Dykstra), Elizabeth (Mrs. G. J. Van Es) of Newkirk, Jennie (Mrs. Ed Vermeer) of Boyden, and Stella (Mrs. Lou de Haan) of Newkirk, were born to them. His wife died Jan. 8, 1933. Four brothers survive, John, Aalt, Bert and Gerrit, and two sisters, Jennie (Mrs. B. Koerselman) of George and Stella (Mrs. John Van der Laan) of Orange City. Funeral services were held Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Vermeer 3-1/2 miles west of Boyden and at 2 P.M. from the Ref. church at Boyden under the direction of Rev. J. W. Brink. He submitted to an operation for cancer in an Orange City hospital a few weeks ago but gradually failed until his death.

JAN ‘JOHN’ VANDER MATEN (aks ‘Alfred’) born 3 April 1867 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands Source: Alton Democrat (5-26-1939) Born: April 3, 1867 Died: May 19, 1939 John Vander Maten Former Resident Alton, Passes On. John Vander Maten, ill for years with many heart troubles and confined to his home the greater part of the time, had improved so much that he could take walks outside. Friday afternoon he went the city hall to view the antique display and while there suffered a heart attack, with death the result. Born April 3, 1867, in the Netherlands, Mr. Vander Maten came to this country in 1885, settling on a farm near Alton. In 1891 he married Miss Allie Hoeve, and the young couple moved to a farm 4 miles south of Boyden where they were blessed with 9 children, of whom are still alive: Herman and Andrew, Sheldon ; Lucy, Mrs. Henry Van't Hof, Orange City: John, Edgerton, Minn.; Gertrude, Mrs. Arie Van Kley, Ashton ; Alice, Mrs. Marion Van Peursem, Boyden, and Jacob of Orange City. There are 33 grandchildren; 3 brothers aud 2 sisters, Bert and Frank of Sheldon, Gerrit, Boyden, Jennie, Mrs. Ben Koerselman, George; and Stella, Mrs, John Vander Laan, Orange City, with the widow and the children, and also many friends regretting the passing of a beloved husband, father and friend. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 23, at 1:30 P.M. in the First Reformed Church with Reverend H. Colenbrander officiating, assisted by Reverend F.B. Mansen of Middleburg.

3. AALT VANDER MATEN born 20 Jul 1868 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands Source: Sioux County Capital (3-10-1938) Aalt Vander Maaten, 69, passed away at the home of his brother, John Vander Maaten with whom he lived, on Monday, March 7, at 4 o'clock A.M. after a brief illness. He was born at Overeyzel, Kamperveen, The Netherlands. In 1885 he came to America with his parents and other members of the family and they settled in Sioux County in the Boyden vicinity. He is survived by four brothers and two sisters. The brothers are John of Orange City, Bert, Frank and Gerrit of near Boyden. Sisters are Jennie, Mrs. Ben Koerselman of George and Stella, Mrs. John Vander Laan of Maurice. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 at the First Reformed Church with Reverend Mr. H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment will be made in the Middleburg Cemetery.

4. BEERT VANDER MATEN born 12 Nov 1870 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands Funeral services for Bert Vander Maten, who passed away Dec. 4, were held Wednesday, December 7, at one o'clock at the Sheldon Holland Home and at 2:00 at the Middleburg Reformed church with Rev. A. J. Newhouse officiating. Burial was in the Middleburg cemetery, with the Coop. Burial Association of Sioux Center in charge of arrangements. Bert was born in the Netherlands, November 12, 1870 and came to America in 1885 with his parents, six brothers and three sisters. He lived on the farm with his parents and brothers and sisters until 1946 when he went to the Sheldon Holland Home. Source: Sioux Center News, December 8, 1955.

5. GERRIT VANDER MATEN born 17 Feb 1873 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the First Reformed church of Orange City for Gerrit Vander Maaten, 86. Rev. Henry Colenbrander officiated at the funeral services and burial was in the Boyden cemetery under the direction of the Co-op Burial Ass'n. of Sioux Center. Mr. Vander Maaten was born in Holland, the Netherlands, in 1873 and came to America in 1895 with his parents, brothers and sisters. He was the sole survivor of a family of ten. He married Ella Vander Sluis in 1902. To them were born four children, all of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Vander Maaten passed away in 1944. Mr. Vander Maaten continued on his farm three miles south of Boyden until four years ago wen he became hospitalized at Grossmans were he spent the remainder of his life, except for a few months in the Pioneer Home. 6. JACOB VANDER MATEN born 3 Aug 1875 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands From the Alton Democrat, September 14, 1912 -- Middleburg news: On Wednesday night occurred the sudden death of Jake Vander Maaten. Jake never had been a strong boy. He didn't feel well Tuesday and Tuesday night he passed away. Heart failure was the cause. Funeral services will be held Saturday from the First Reformed church. The remains will be laid to rest in the Middleburg cemetery. Find A Grave.com has Jacob Vander Maaten, 1875-1912, son of Herman (1834-1920) and Lubbijge (1840-1897) Vander Maaten, buried in Middleburg Cemetery, Sioux County, IA. (Several siblings are also listed.) This is probably him, although at age 37 he was hardly a boy.

7. FRANK VANDER MATEN bor 30 Apr 1878 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands VanderMaten, Frank born 1878-1946 buried in Capel Tsp cemetery Middleburg IA. Alton Democrat of Jun 27, 1946
Frank Vander Maaten 68 passed away Saturday morning, June 22 in a local hospital. He suffered with asthma and heart trouble for some time. Mr. Vander Maaten was born April 30, 1878 in the Netherlands. He came to America with his parents who settled at Alton and soon after moved to a farm 4 miles south of Boyden, where the decedent continued until the time of his death, living these last years with his brother Bert. He was never married. Surviving him are his brother, Bert and a half brother, Gerrit Vander Maaten, both of Boyden and Stella, Mrs. John Vander Laan of Orange City. Preceding him in death are 4 brothers, John, Albert, Jacob and a half brother Frank, and his sister Mary, Mrs. Gt. Vanden Bosch. Funeral Services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Andrew Vander Maaten home south of Boyden and at 1:30 P.m. in the Ref. church at Middleburg.

8. MARRIGJE ‘MARY’ VANDER MATEN born 21 May 1880 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands From the Boyden Reporter, February 10, 1927: OBITUARY MRS. GERRIT VANDEN BOSCH Mrs. Gerrit Vanden Bosch was born in the Netherlands, May 31st, 1880, and died at her home south of Boyden, February 6th, at 5:00 o’clock in the morning, at the age of 46 years, 8 months and 15 days. Funeral services were held Tuesday at eleven o’clock at the house and at twelve o’clock at the First Reformed Church, at Boyden, with Rev. J. M. Lumkes officiating. Interment was made in the Boyden cemetery. Deceased came to this country at the age of five years, and ever since has lived in this community. On February 11th, 1903, she was united in marriage with Gerrit Vanden Bosch, and to this union twelve children were born, three of them died in infancy. The nine children living to mourn the death of their mother are Henry, Lucy, Henrietta, Hermina, Gertie, Herman, Winifred, Stella, and Margaret. Mrs. Vanden Bosch has for the past two years been suffering from cancer, which was ultimately the cause of her death. During the past two years she has made two trips to Savannah, Mo., where specialists had cured the external cancers, but no cure has as yet been found for the internal cancer, which took her life. Deceased was a true and loving wife and mother. She was a devout Christian woman and a member of the First Reformed Church of Boyden. Her sudden demise is a sad shock to the father and children, and she will indeed be greatly missed by them. The Reporter extends its heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved father and children in their hour of sorrow.

Janna VANDER MATEN born 26 May 1882 Kampen, Overijssel, Netherlands Source: Sioux Center News (3-6-1952) Born: August 26, 1882 Died: March 3, 1952 Mrs. Ben Koerselman Sr. of Boyden, Iowa, passed away Monday afternoon of a heart attack at the age of 69 years. She was born in the Netherlands and came to America in 1885. She was united in marriage to Ben Koerselman February 9, 1905 and lived in the Boyden and George vicinity all her married life. She was an active member of the First Reformed Church of Boyden. Jennie "Janna" Koerselman is survived by her husband Ben; four daughters: Mrs. Harold Wortman, Mrs. Lloyd Eberline, Mrs. Ilert Eilders all of George, Iowa and Mrs. Hildred Dykstra of Boyden; five sons, Gerrit, of Middleburg, Iowa, Benjamin, Herman, Dick all of George, and Reverend Lewis Koerselman of Wendell, Minnesota; one sister, Mrs. John Vander Laan of Orange City, Iowa; two brothers, Gerrit Vander Maaten of Boyden, and Bert Vander Maaten of Sheldon. She is also survived by thirty-four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the First Reformed Church at Boyden, the Sioux Center Cooperative Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Reverend Chester Postman will officiate. Burial will be in the Boyden Cemetery .

11. STELLA VANDER MATEN born 21 Jun 1885 Alton, Sioux, Iowa From the August 25, 1955 Sioux County Capital: Service Held for Mrs. Vander Laan Life-Long Resident Of Sioux County Funeral services were held here Monday, August 22, for Mrs. John Vander Laan. Rev. H. Colenbrander officiated at the services in the First Reformed church. Mrs. Stella Vander Laan (nee Vander Maten) was born on a farm one mile north of Alton on June 29, 1885. At the age of one year she moved with her parents to a farm four miles south of Boyden where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to John Vander Laan on February 7, 1912. Six children were born to his union: Louis of Beresford, SD.; Lorena, Mrs. Marlon Ten Napel of Ireton; Herman, who preceded her in death, during World War II; Marion and Clarence of Orange City; and Harold of Wall Lake, Ia. Eleven grandchildren survive and two brothers, Gerrit Vander Maten of Boyden and Bert Vander Maten of Sheldon, and many nieces and nephews. Six brothers, two sisters and one grandson also preceded her in death. She died August 18, 1955, at the age of 70 years, 1 month and 19 days. She was a faithful member of the First Reformed church. Pallbearers were Louis, Marion, Clarence and Harold Vander Laan, Marion Ten Napel and Louis Vander Laan Jr. Van Etten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements with burial in the Orange City cemetery. Boyden Reporter of Feb 12, 1920 H. Vander Maaten Passes Away.
Herman Vander Maaten, who lived four miles south of Boyden, passed away at his home on Sunday, February 8th. Funeral services for the deceased were held at the Reformed Church at Middleburg, on Wednesday, with Rev. Douwstra officiating.
Mr. Vander Maaten was past eighty five years of age. He was married twice both wives preceding him in death. He was the father of eleven children, nine of them are living. They are Frank Vander Maaten by his first wife, and John, Alfred, Gerrit, Bert, Frank, Mrs. Gerrit Vander Bosch, Mrs. Ben Koerselman, and Mrs. John Vander Laan, by his second wife. Deceased was a faithful member of the Reformed Church at Middleburg,. His death came as a shock.

Marriage in the Netherlands Harmen van der Maten a carpenter age 31, married Lubbigje van de Maten 25. He was the son of Frank van der Maten and Marrigje van de Kamp and She was the dau of Frank Janszoon van der Maten and Gerrigje Klein, they married on 27 April 1866 at Oldebroek Gelderland Netherlands. Harmen had previously been married to Marrigje Pruim.
