This biography of Wiebe Miersma family was submitted by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. This is part of an effort to identify the early settlers of Sioux County Iowa and preserve their heritage.

1885 Iowa census lists Wiebe Miersma age 34 born Netherlands living in Welcome township, with wife Maggie 23 and children Tryntje 2 and Hettie 0. This was at the time they were among the first members of the newly formed Middleburg church.

Netherlands marriage of Wybe Wiersma born Firdgum, Friesland, age 30 to bride Maaike Pluimer born Tzummarum age 19. Wybe was the son of Htte Theunis Miersma and Sipkje Wybes van der Veer. Maaike was the daughter of Klaas Pieters Pluimer and Trijntje Sakes Hoekstra, they were married 19 Mar 1881 at Barradeel, Friesland, Netherlands.

Wiebe Miersma born 25 Feb 1851 Firdgum Freisland, Netherlands died 13 May 1940 Sheldon IA. He was the son of Hette Theunis Miersma 1823-1893 and Sipkje Wybes Van der Veer 1824-1859. Wiebe married Maaike ‘Maggie’ Pluimer .Maaike Pluimer was born 22 Sep 1861 Minnertsga, Het Blidt, Friesland, Netherlands and died 2 May 1941 Hull, Sioux, Iowa. She was the daughter of Klaas Pieters Pluimer 1830-1901 and Trijntje Sakes Hoekstra 1837-1921. They were married 19 March 1881 Barradeel, Friesland Netherlands.

1 TRIJNTJE CORNELIA MIERSMA born 16 Mar 1882 Orange City IA died 3 Jan 1953 Sioux County IA. She married Martin Jans Prins 1878-1954 Source: Sioux Center News (1-8-1953) Born: March 16, 1882 Died: January 3, 1953 Mrs. Martin Prins died at her home January 3, 1953 of a stroke. Mrs. Prins, formerly Kate Miersma, was born at Newkirk March 16, 1882 and on March 6, 1902 was united in marriage to Martin Prins, who with the following children now survive: John of Rock Vally; Wilbert of Orange City; Grace, Mrs. William Humme of Boyden; Harry of Hull and Maggie, Mrs. Sam Kooima of Doon. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; one brother, Harry Miersma and one sister, Mts. Sarah Vande Stouwe, both of Hull. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 o’clock from the home and 1:30 from the First Reformed Church in charge of Reverend William De Jong. Pallbearers, nephews of the deceased, were Gerrit Vande Stouwe, Wilmer Miersma, John Prins, Harold Mulder, Carl Ver Sreeg and John Mantle. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Cooperative Burial Association.

Sioux County Index - Hull Dec 24, 1959 Harry Miersma, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wiebe Miersma, was born on a farm near Newkirk, Iowa, on March 23, 1884. When a boy of about two years of age his parents moved to a farm three miles south of Hull where he spent his boyhood and where he himself farmed for a number of years.
On February 25, 1908 he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie TeSlaa to which union six children were born: Wilmer, Gerrit, Margaret Mrs. Si Pollema) and Joe, all of Hull, IA; Henry of Artesia CA, and Ed of Lakewood CA.
When he was 18 years of age he made confession of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in the First Reformed Church of Hull, Iowa. Mr.Miersma was a child of two years when the First Reformed Church was organized in 1885. He reamined with the Church all his life, and was the only person, living who was with the Church at its organization. He served as a deacon in the First Reformed Church for five years and was a regular and faithful attendant to the word and work of the Lord.
In April 1950 he moved to Hull, Iowa, where he had since resided. He leaves to mourn his death his six children, one sister, Sarah (Mrs John Vande Stouwe) who resides in the Holland Home in Sheldon. Besides these he leaves to mourn his death 17 grandchildren, 2 greatgrandchildren and a number of relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife on January 4, 1936; by his parents, by one sister, Mrs. Martin Prins, and one grandchild.
Mr. Miersma passed away Saturday, December 12, 1959. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 16, from the Little Chapel in Sioux Center and the First Reformed Church in Hull. Rev. N. Rozeboom officiated. Interment was in Hope cemetery, at Hull. Pall bearers were the five sons and one son-in-law.3 SIPIE ‘SARAH’ MIERSMA born 27 Oct 1886 Hull IA died 13 Nov 1962 Sheldon IA. Died: November 13, 1962 Mrs. Sarah VanDe Stouwe passed away Tuesday morning, November 13, at the Sheldon Community Hospital following a short illness. Sarah Miersma was born October 27, 1886 and reached the age of 76 years and 17 days. On February 25, 1909 she was married to John Van De Stouwe and resided in Hull. Her husband passed away June 13, 1950. For the past six years she lived in the Holland Home in Sheldon. Survivors are the son, Gerrit, of Sheldon and two grandsons. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, November 16, at 1:00 in the Kraai Funeral Chapel and at 1:30 at the American Reformed Church, in Hull, Iowa.OBITUARIES of Wiebe and Maaike:
Seems to be no mention of the fact that they ever lived in Middleburg but the founding families of the Middleburg church lists their names as members received and approved about 1885. From the Sioux Center News of May 16, 1940
Weibe Miersma 89, Dies Mr. Wiebe Miersma died at the Sheldon Holland Home Monday night at the age of 89 years. He had been ill for about three weeks.
He was married 59 years, and is survived by his wife and three children, namely, Kate, Mrs. Martin Prins; Harry, and Sarah, Mrs. John Vande Stouwe.
Funeral services will be hsld at the Sheldon Holland Home at 12:30 Thursday, Rev. Vis officiating, and at the First Ref. Church in Hull at 2:15 Rev. Douwstra officiating. Grandchildren will be pall bearers.

Funeral of Early Sioux county Settler Today; Came to Sioux county in 1881
Wiebe Miersma, one of the real old settlers of this part of Sioux county died at the Sheldon Holland home on Monday evening May 13th1940. He was 89 years old February 25the last.
Mr. and Ms. Miersma celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on March 19th of this year. Mr. Wiebe Miersma and Miss Maggie Pluimer were married in the Netherlands in 1881, and three days later sailed for this country settling at Orange City. Later they moved to Hull and in 1836 they took up their residence in the Sheldon home where Mr. Miersma passed away Monday. Besides the widow Mr. Miersma is survived y three children: Kate Mrs. Martin Prins of Perkins, Harry of Hull and Sarah Mrs. John Vande Stouwe of Hull, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one sister Miss S. Miersma of Maurice.
The funeral will be held today this Thursday afternoon from the Sheldon Holland Home at 12:30 and from the First Reformed church of Hull at 2:q5 o’clock conducted by Rev. G. H. Douwstra. Mrs. W. Miersma, 79 Years Old, Buried Here Monday.Mrs. W. Miersma, who was confined to the Hull Hospital three weeks ago suffering a broken hip in a fall at her home in the Holland Home at Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Friday afternoon, May 2nd 1941 at about four o’clock.
Maggie Miersma, nee Pluimer, was born in Holland on September 19, 1861 and passed away at Hull Iowa at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 15 days. She was married to Wiebe Miersma in the Netherlands on March 19, 1881 and on March 21 of that year sailed for America. They settled first at Orange City later moving to Hull where they resided for almost forty years. In 1930 they took up residence in the Sheldon Holland Home.
On May 13, 1940, Mr. Miersma passed away leaving Mrs. Miersma to mourn the loss of a devoted and loving husband. On April 14th Mrs. Miersma suffered a broken hip in a fall at the home and was taken to the Hull Hospital for treatment, but old age and complications caused by a severe siege of the flu which she had recently suffered caused her to suffer much and she passed away last Friday afternoon.
She is survived by three children; Kate Mrs. Martin Prins of Perkins, Harry Miersma of South of Hull and Sarah Mrs. John Vande Stouwe of Hull; also by a sister Mrs. . De Vries of Rock Valley and two brothers: Rev. Gus Pluimer of Oregon and Joe Pluimer of Canada. She also leaves twelve Grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren to mourn her loss. Two daughters and a son preceded their mother and father in death.
Funeral services were held Monday May 5th from the home of her daughter Mrs. John Vande Stouwe in Hull at 1:00 o’clock, with Rev. C. H. Douwstra in charge. Services were also held in the Hull First Reformed church of which she was a charter member, with Rev. J. Vis of Sheldon and Rev. R. A. Jager of the Hull American Reformed church officiating. Interment was in Hope cemetery at Hull
