Slothouber, Gerrit 1855-1928 and Antonia Willemsen Family

The BIOS of the Sioux County Iowa pioneer Gerrit Slothouber family submitted by Wilma J. Vande of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Source for most of the information is the Willemsen family history book by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Some supporting research was done as sources cited.

Gerrit Emilius Slothouber was born 8 May 1855 Vorden, Gelderland, Netherlands and died 18 Apr 1928 at Middleburg IA. His parents were Gerrit Emilius Sltohouber 1813-1861 and Garritjen Jolink 1826-1865. He married Antonia Willemsen on 15 Oct 1881 at Gorssel, Gelderland Netherlands.

Antonia Willemsen Mrs. Gerrit Slothouber was born 1860 and died 1938 at Middleburg. She was the daughter of Middleburg pioneers Willem Willemsen and Berendina Kleinlebbink. See Willem Willemsen biography on this Bios page and site. The Willemsens came to America in 1888 from Zutphen Gelderland Netherlands. Many of their children were married at the time and also immigrated to America.

1 GERRIT SLOTHOUBER born 29 May 1886 Middleburg IA married Nov 1, 1911 Newkirk IA died 5 Jn 1985 He married Minnie Langstraat who died 22 Mar 1981. Source: Sioux Center News(6-12-1985) Born: May 29, 1886 Died: June 5, 1985 Services for Gerrit Slothouber, Sr., 99, of Boyden will be held today (Saturday) at 2 P.M. at the First Reformed Church at Boyden. Pastor Sylvester Moths will officiate. Burial will be at the Boyden Cemetery under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Boyden. Mr. Slothouber died June 5 at the Community Memorial Hospital Nursing Wing at Sheldon. Pallbearers at the service will be Kenneth, Michael, Donald, Wayne and Gerald Slothouber and Elmer Schmidt. Gerrit Slothouber, the son of Gerrit and Antonia Willemsen Slothouber, was born May 29, 1886 at Middleburg. On November 1, 1911, he was married to Minnie Langstraat at Newkirk. Mrs. Slothouber died March 22, 1981. He owned and operated the Northside Dairy at Boyden for many years. He was a member of the First Reformed Church where he was a member of the consistory and taught Sunday School. Survivors include three sons, Gerrit E., Casey and Tony, all of Boyden; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

2 MINNIE SLOTHOUBER was born 1883 and died Jan 1943 Middleburg IA. She married Walter Vander Wilt born 1879 died abt 1 Jun 1954 Middleburg. Sioux Center News, January 7, 1943 Mrs. Walter Vander Wilt passed away at her home near Middleburg on Saturday evening, Jan. 2, 1943 following an illness of several months due to diabetes and heart complications. She had reached the age of 59 years. Funeral services were held for her on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 6, 1943 at the First Reformed Church at Middleburg with the Rev. H. Kolenbrander officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Mansen of Orange City. Left to mourn her departure are the husband Mr. Walter Vander Wilt and three sons, Amos of Sioux Center; Tony W. of Middleburg and Albert of Milford and one daughter Mrs. Jerry Dykstra of Sioux Center. Also nine grandchildren and two brothers Albert Slothouber of Orange City and Gerrit Slothouber of Boyden.

3 GERTRUDE SLOTHOUBER born 2 Feb 1882 Netherland married 6 Feb 1900 died 25 May 1941 Boyden IA She married Henry Roetman he died Oct 1911 Middleburg and then she married James Ver Hoef on 25 Aug 1915. Sioux County Capital, June 5, 1941 Ms. Jim Ver Hoef, nee Gertie Slothouber, was born in The Netherlands on Feb. 2, 1882, and died in Boyden at the age of 59 years on May 25 at 8:30 o'clock.
At the age of 4 years she came to America with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Gerrit Slothouber. She was married to Henry Roetman on Feb. 6, 1900 who preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 1911. To this union two children were born Gerrit and Amos Roetman. On August 24, 1915 Gertie Roetman was married to Jim Ver Hoef and to this union there were 5 children born namely, Walter, Jennie, Bernie, Sam and Clarence. She is survived by her husband Jim Ver Hoef, and her children, Gerrit and Amos Roetman southwest of Boyden, Walter Ver Hoef of Cherokee, Jennie Brinks of Boyden, Bernard and Clarence of Sioux Center and Sam of Rock Valley. Other survivors are one sister, Mrs. Walter Vander Wilt of Middleburg and two brothers Albert Slothouber of Middleburg and Gerrit Slothouber of Boyden and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Reformed Church at Boyden, Wednesday, May 28, Rev. J. W. & Rev. Z. Roetman of Newkirk. Interment was made in the Middleburg Cemetery.

4. ALBERT SLOTHOUBER born 1 Nov 1888 died 14 May 1968 He married Jeanette Grooters born 17 Oct 1886 died 10 Apr 1972. Source: Sioux Center News (5-23-1968) Born: November 1, 1888 Died: May 14, 1968 Funeral services were held at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City May 17 for Albert Slothouber, 79, who died May 14 at the Orange City Hospital following a long illness. Services were conducted by the Reverend Donald Lenderink and burial was made in Middleburg Cemetery. Mr. Slothouber was born November 1, 1888, the son of Gerrit and Antonia (Willemsen) Slothouber. He was married February 16, 1916, to Jeanette Grooters of Boyden. The couple farmed north of Orange City until 1941 when they moved to Orange City. Survivors include his widow; three daughters - Mrs. Everett Boone of Sheldon, Iowa, Mrs. William Langstraat of Boyden, Iowa, and Mrs. Ralph Mouw of Orange City, Iowa; a brother, Gerrit, of Boyden, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren

OBITUARY of Gerrit Slothouber 1855-1928

Gerrit Slothouber, for many years a member of the Middleburg Reformed Church, a progressive farmer and a respected citizen, died Wednesday morning at his home in Orange City. He would have been 73 years of age on May 8.
Mr. Slothouber was born at Vorden, Gelderland, the Netherlands and married Miss Antonia Willemsen there in 1881. In the years 1884 they emigrated to America, coming to Alton where for a time they lived with his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Willemsen, who farmed what is now the Henry J. Scholten place northeast of Alton.
Later they moved to Middleburg, farming one-half mile northeast of there, where they lived until moving later into Orange City a few years ago.
Four children survive their father: Gertrude, Mrs. James Ver Hoef of Middleburg; Minnie, Mrs. Walter Vander Wilt of Middleburg; Gerrit, farming west of Boyden and Albert of Middleburg.
He is also survived by his brother Anton who now makes his in the Pioneer Home at Orange City, for many years a resident of Alton.
Funeral services will be held this Saturday at 12:30 P.M. at the home and at one o’clock at the First Reformed Church, Orange City, Reverend H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment will take place at the Middleburg Cemetery.

OBITUARY of Antonia Mrs. Gerrit Slothouber 1860-1938
Alton Democrat of Nov 25, 1938 Mrs. Gerrit Slothouber, nee Antonia Willemsen, passed away Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James VerHoef, at Boyden. Born at Zutphen, Gelderland, Netherlands, 78 years, 7 months, ago, she was married at the age of 21 yars to Mr. Gerrit Slothouber who died 10 years ago. In 1885 they came to America with two Children and settled in the vicinity of Middleburg where they farmed for 20 years, then moved to Orange City. In the early fall Mrs. Slothouber no longer was able to keep house and moved to the home of her daughter at Boyden.
Four children survive their mother, as follows: Mrs. James Verhoef of Boyden; Minnie Mrs. W. Vander Wilt of Middleburg; Albert of Middleburg; and Gerrit of Boyden. She is also survived by one brother, Hendrik Willemsen of Sioux Center, and by three sisters, Mrs. D. J. Oostenink of Hull, Mrs. Mary Vander Brake of Orange City; and Mrs. Van Meeveren of Seattle WA.
Funeral Services were conducted at the home at Boyden and in the First Reformed church of Orange city, in a double funeral as stated in the obituary of Mr. Antony Slothouber above.
