Condon, John 1866-1919 and Emma Hodam Family

This story was taken from page 370 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

Emma Hodam married John Condon Mar. 27, 1895. John Condon was born Apr. 1, 1866 and died Oct. 3, 1919, age 53 yrs. Emma, John’s wife, very well known in Ireton, was born May 12, 1862 and passed away Sept. 22, 1925, age 63 yrs.

They, with brothers Herman and Albert Hodam, homesteaded at Timber Lake, S.D. in 1910 when they left Ireton and remained in S.D. the rest of their lives. They are buried at Timber Lake, S.D.

John and Emma had 5 children-all born in Ireton, Ia. They are:

1 Clara Condon Blasingame, born 1896 who wrote 2 western books before her passing in 1968. The books were “Luck of Lost Canyon” and “Dakota Cowboy.” Her husband was a cowboy and rancher, passing away 3 years earlier. They had 3 children.

2 Karl John Condon born 1897 , married his wife, Margaret, who passed away several years later leaving him with 3 children. He was retired from the railroad and now resides in a nursing home in Nopenwig, Mn. The one big love of his life was baseball and was active in it until he had 3 strokes which put him in a home.

3 Gertrude Condon Johnston born 1901-2001 is living in a retirement home in Duluth, Mn., but spends her winters in Texas. Her husband also worked for the railroad and died in 1953. They had 6 children.

4 Minnie Condon Long born 1900 has lived in the Timber Lake, S.D. area, where she was married in 1918. They started ranching in 1918 and have been on the same ranch ever since. He passed away in 1972. Minnie still is on the ranch and enjoys many activities in the community. They have 5 children.

5 Bessie Condon Groshman born 1904, left S.D. in 1935 for Duluth, Mn. where her husband found work with the railroad. Her husband passed away a number of years ago. She now is living in Proctor, Mn. they had 9 children.

John William Condon was born Independence, Buchanan County IA and died 3 October 1919 in South Dakota. He was the son of Thomas Condon and Ellen Mc Cardle. He married Emma Hodam on 27 May 1895 at Sioux County IA.

Emma Hodam was born May 1862 Illinois and died South Dakota Sep 22, 1925.
The 1870 census of Kingston, Dekalb IL has Emma born 1862 Prussia, daughter of Gotlieb 50 yrs and Wilhelmina Hodam 47 yrs. They had children Bertha 15, Herman 13, Albert 11 and Emma 8. This entry verifies that Emma Hodam had a brother Herman as listed in her death article below.

Word to friends announces the death of John Condon at Timber Lake SD., last week from dropsy and other complications. His wife had been visiting here only a week or so before. They used to live on the farm now occupied by Martin Twillman, just north of town.

OBITUARY OF EMMA CONDON died Sept 22, 1925
No obituary was found in the local papers. Her husband died at Timber Lake SD so it is assumed she died and was buried there also.

Herman Hodam and his sister, Mrs. John Condon, arrived Saturday from Timber Lake, S. D., for- a visit with old Ireton friends and to look after business matters. Mr. Hodam owns the farm operated by Martin Twillman, just south of town. Mr. Hodam and Mrs. Condon were among the very earliest settlers in this vicinity. Their parents homesteaded here in 1870 when there were but a very few other families in this locality. Mrs. Condon stated to an Independent reporter that there was a time when she knew every citizen of Sioux county by name. They left Ireton and went to Timber Lake about twelve years ago where They homesteaded and have since made their home.
