Kass, John 1832-1902 and Anna Mary Weber Family
This BIOS for the John Kass family was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Stories of the life and times of the pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County Books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk give a very colorful account of pioneer life with it's joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis give a great historical account of the area. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” also has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County as well as pictures of some of the pioneers.
Because of the absence of a published biography, various aspects of their pioneer life and family were found in various sources.

JOHN KASS DEAD - John Kass died at his home in this city [Alton] Sunday morning [Feb. 23] at five o'clock. He had been in failing health for a year past but was only confined to the house for five weeks and to his bed for one week. The immediate cause of his death was a congestion of the bowels from which it was impossible for him to rally at his advanced age. Had he lived till March sixteen he would have been seventy years old. Born in Conter Luxembourg Europe in 1832 he came to this country in 1854 at the age of twenty-two. Three years later he went back to the old country and brought over as his wife Anna Weber who survives him. They settled first at St. Donatus this state and moved seven years later to Caledonia Minnesota where they stayed till eight years ago when they sold their farm and moved to Alton--building the home in which he died. Of their union nine children were born and all are still living. They are in order of age: Peter Kass and Mrs. Matt Bamberg of Alton, John Cass of Currie Minnesota, Mrs. Nic Delperding of Alton, Mrs. Frank Young of Slayton, Mrs. Gertrude Henrich of Alton, Mrs. Hubert Briemeyer of Caledonia, Mrs. John Henrich of Lennox, Mrs. Al Schaul of Alton. All the children with their respective husbands and wives were present. Besides the children and thirty-four grandchildren deceased leaves an aged brother at Bellevue Iowa and a sister in the old country. Among other relatives who attended the funeral were Nic Weber of Slayton who is a brother of Mrs. Kass, a sister-in-law of the deceased, Mrs. Margaret Kass and his nephew John Kass from Remsen, nieces Mesdames Nic Graff of Granville and Hillyer of LeMars and nephew Mike Kass of LeMars, sons-in-law Frank Young of Slayton Minnesota and John Henrich of Lennox South Dakota. Messrs. and Mesdames Matt Fitz and Theo. Ruppert, Mesdames Schaul and Heurtz, Messrs. Nic Haupert and Nic Tritz--all of LeMars followed their deceased friend to his final resting place. The funeral was held from St. Mary's church on Tuesday at nine. It is a matter of comfort to the bereaved family that the departed passed away peacefully and in full possession of all his faculties and that his life had been such that his entrance into a better world is assured.OBITUARY of Anna Weber Mrs. John Kass 1833-1922

MRS. ANNA KASS SETTLED AT CALEDINIA, MINNESOTA, IN YEAR OF 1864--NEARLY 90 YEARS OLD--MOTHER OF LARGE FAMILY--POSSESSED OF VERY BRIGHT MIND--FUNERAL HELD THIS FRIDAY
Mrs. Anna Kass, mother of Mr. Peter Kass and Mrs. Gertrude Henrich of Alton, died in the small home where she has chosen to live since the death of her husband in 1902 on Wednesday morning at about 4:25 o’clock from the ills incident to old age. She had been failing for several days and the end came suddenly and unexpectedly and with no suffering for Grandmother Kass.
Although she would have been 90 years old next January 6, her mind was keenly alert and her remarkable memory of past events and incidents was a source of pleasure to those who talked with her. A number of years ago Mrs. Kass fell and broke her hip but continued to live in her house alone although assisted in every possible way by her son and daughter. She managed to get around the house with the assistance of a chair until her last illness. She was a devout and staunch member of the Catholic Church and a devoted wife and mother. She belonged to the Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Church.
Born in Sandweiler, Luxembourg, January 6, 1833, she spent her girlhood there and received a good education. In January of 1877 she was married to John Kass. They first settled at St. Dontus this state and moved seven years later to Caledonia, Minnesota where they stayed till eight years until 1854 when they went west to Texas but a drought sent them back north and they spent the balance of the year, for which they had rented their farm at Caledonia, in Alton, moving here in 1894. In 1902 Mr. Kass died and two years later the second eldest child Mrs. Matt Bamberg passed on. The remaining children are Peter Kass of Alton, John Kass of Currie, Minnesota, Mrs. Nic Delperding of Alton, Mrs. Frank Young of Slayton, Mrs. Gertrude Henrich of Alton, Mrs. Hubert Briemeyer of Caledonia, Mrs. John Henrich of Lennox, Mrs. Al Schaul of Alton. Besides the eight children, one brother, Nic Weber of Slayton, Minnesota and one sister, Miss Elizabeth Weber, school teacher at Sandweiler Luxembourg, survive her although the two latter are considerably younger than Mrs. Kass.
The funeral was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and she was laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Note: St. Mary’s church book does have a brief story and a picture the son Peter Kass’s family.
