This BIOS for the George Schaack family was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Stories of the life and times of the pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County Books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk give a very colorful account of pioneer life with it's joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis give a great historical account of the area. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” also has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County as well as pictures of some of the pioneers.

1900 Census of East Orange Tsp, Sioux County IA George Schaack age 79 born abt 1821 Germany immigrated 1889, married 1850, he was a day laborer, he was a lodger at residence of Lizzie Deidrich 47, George Schaack was 79, Huberta E. Schaack, wife born May 1826 Germany was 74 and John Schaack was born Jul 1855 Germany age 44. single, rail road laborer.

OBITUARY of George Schaack 1820 – 1904 Source: Alton Democrat, October 29, 1904
On Tuesday afternoon [October 25] at his home east of John Gleysteen's George Schaack passed away at the ripe old age of eighty-four years. He was born in Wiltz, Luxemburg in 1820 and in 1850 was married to Miss Lizzie Huberte. Their children were all born in the old country. Pete who lives in Chicago, Mrs. George Wagner of Granville and John at Alton survive. Several children died. Deceased came to America fifteen years ago and lived at Granville until about a year and nine months ago when he and his wife and son John moved to Alton. John has worked at William Van Nimwegen's harness shop up to a few months ago but is now operating a repair shop of his own. Four years ago the old folks celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and were one of the oldest couples in northwest Iowa. He leaves a wife aged seventy-eight to mourn his loss. The funeral which was held from St. Mary's church Thursday morning at nine o'clock was largely attended--Rev. Brune conducting the services. Interment took place in St. Mary's cemetery.

Grandma Shaack (Schaack) died at Granville Wednesday and was buried in Alton Friday. She lived here up to a year or so ago at about which time her husband (George) died.
(Presumed she was buried in St. Mary's cemetery Alton where her husband was buried.)

Grandmother Shaack (Schaack) who died at Granville on the seventh and was buried in Alton on the ninth was born Elizabeth Huberty in Harlingen (Harlange), Luxemburg on May 29, 1827. She was therefore eighty years old on the 29th day of last May. She was united in marriage to George Shaack November 12, 1850. They came to America in 1888 and he died at Alton in October 1904. Three children are living . Peter of Chicago and John of Oyens and Mrs. George Wagner of Granville at whose home deceased breathed her last.

In the 1920 census of Reed, Blaine, Montana, Peter Schaak age 57, born 1857 was the head of the household, Mary J. Schaack was his wife age 54, they had children Katerine 19, Elizabeth 16 and Peter’s brother John Schaack age 63 was living with them. John was single and a farm laborer.

The Granville community was saddened by the passing of Mrs. George Wagner on Friday evening at her home. She had been ill for several months.
Marie Schaak was born at Harlingen (Harlange), Grand Duchy de Luxembourg, on September 22, 1865 and at the time of her death was 70 years old and five months of age. She came to this country at the age of 22 with her father. She was married to George Wagner, February 8th, 1893 at Granville. They lived at Alton and Le Mars until August 1898 when they moved to Granville, their home for the past 37 years.
Mrs. Wagner was a devoted mother and well loved by all for her friendly manner and kind deeds. She was a devout member of St. Joseph’s Church and member of the Christian Mother Society for many years.
Surviving are her husband, George Wagner, one daughter, Catherine, Mrs. William Brow of Anton, and two sons, Peter and Deme of Chicago. She is survived by thirteen grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Joseph’s Church at two o’clock, Reverend Francis Illg officiating. Interment was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Pallbearers were Vincent O’Connor, J.P. Gaui, Herman Hodapp, Dan Rohr, Carl Fischer and August Luken.
