This story was taken from pages 44 -47 of the Rock Valley St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book written for the centennial of the church in about 1982(?). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.
Joseph John Barry was born in Grundy County, Illinois in 1857. His father John Joseph Barry served in the war between the states and died of pneumonia shortly before the end of that war.
Joseph John left Illinois as a young man and fro several years worked near Ida Grove, Iowa. In the early 1880’s, he came to Rock Valley and lived with the Thomas Fitzgerald family on the farm which he later bought, four miles north and four miles west of Rock Valley, where he lived until his death on May 13, 1936.In 1890 he married Margaret ‘Daisy’ Hevern in St. Patrick’s Church in Sheldon Iowa. Daisy passed away in December of 1958. To this union were born nine children: Frank, Mary, Elsie, Margaret, Ethyle, Paul, Joseph, William and Claire.

Francis Leo ‘Frank’ was born in December of 1890. In 1940 he married Stella Jungerson of Inwood. For many years, Frank was District Manager for Funk Brow. Hybrid Seed Corn Co. in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. He won many awards from the company while employed for them. On July 23, 1951 Frank passed away. Frank and Stella had one son, Thomas Joseph, born in 1941. Tommy died in January 5, 1959 at the age of 17. He is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rock Valley.Mary Isabel ‘Maye’ was born April 13, 1892. She went to a country school through the grades and then attended high school at Mt. St. Clare in Clinton, Iowa, graduating with honors in 1910. She taught in a rural school near the Barry home until 1918 when she left to attend Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Upon completion of her course there she taught in the Sioux Falls Public School System for eight years. In 1928 she gave up her teaching career to marry Charles S. Schmidt. Charles was head of the Art Dept. in the South Dakota Engraving Co. in Sioux Falls. After two years of living in Sioux Falls they moved to Sioux City, Iowa where Charles was sent to open a branch office for the Engraving Co. In 1937 they moved to Des Moines and in 1945 to Chicago. Charles suffered a massive stroke in 1965 which left him unable to continue working. They moved back to Sioux Calls and in 1978 Charles passed away. Maye continues to live in Sioux Falls.
Elsie Agnes Barry was born on April 27, 1895 and attended rural school. She attended her first two years of high school at St. Mary’s in Rock Valley and graduated from Mr. St. Clare in Clinton, Iowa in 1913. She taught in rural schools in Lyon County, Iowa and in January of 1938 she married John P. Haas at St. Mary’s church in Rock Valley. They lived in Iowa Falls, Iowa where John operated a Super Service Station until his retirement in 1965. He passed away in January of 1977 and was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Rock Valley. Elsie still resides in Iowa Falls.
Margaret Evelyn Barry was born in 1897. She graduated from Mr. St. Clare and taught in Lyon County for several years. Ill health force her retirement and she passed away in Jun of 1969. She is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rock Valley.
Ethyle K. Barry was born in May of 1901. She graduated from St. Mary’s in 1919. She then attended Iowa State Teacher’s College for three years and obtained her B. A. Degree from Sioux Falls College. She taught a year in Marshalltown, Iowa and for many years in the Sioux Falls Schools, the last 25 years in Washington High. She retired in 1966 and died in 1974. She is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rock Valley.
Paul Edward Barry was born January 13, 1903. He attended a nearby rural school and then St. Mary’s in Winona, Minnesota. He then went to Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. In 1926 he married Gladys Hanson of Canton, SD. They had three children: Robert J., Jack C., both residing in El Paso, TX, and Bonnie Barry Cason of Bonicia CA.
Joseph Michael Barry was born on Jun 18, 1905. He graduated from Inwood High School in 1924 and worked on the home farm until March 1, 1930 when a sudden and untimely death took our beloved Joseph. Riding with a neighbor in the neighbor’s car, they were struck by a fast moving train from Chicago. Both were killed, almost instantly. The deaths were a terrible shock to their families, as well as to the entire area.
William Patrick ‘Bill’ Barry born March 17, 1907 married Colletta K. Flanagan, born Oct 13, 1907. Bill worked as a farmer and a steel worker. He is now retired in Rock Valley. Colletta worked as a teacher in a beauty school in La Crosse, Wisconsin and then as a housewife. She is retired also now in Rock Valley They have four children. (summarized from book story) Joseph M. Claire Barry the youngest of Joseph and Margaret Barry family, was born Arp 25, 1910. He graduated from Inwood High School in 1928 and spent his entire life on the farm where he was born until moving to Rock valley in 1971. He married Marin McGuire born May 20, 1916. They were the parents of two sons, James Timothy and Thomas Michael. (summarized from the article in St. Mary’s church book)

Mr. Joseph Barry aged 79 years passed away at his farm home, eight miles northwest of Rock Valley. Mr. Barry is one of the pioneer settlers of this territory. At present no particulars could be learned so an obituary will be in next week’s issue.

Joseph Barry Called - Joseph John Barry passed away last Thursday morning at this home northwest of Rock Valley after an illness of several months, becoming seriously ill Sunday morning.
He was born in Grundy county IL. On March 10, 1857, where he grew to manhood. At the age of 23 he came to Iowa, locating in Ida county where he resided two years. From there he moved to a homestead where he had resided 54 years. Coming to this county when there was nothing much but open prairie. He built goo buildings and planted trees making a beautiful farm home for this family.
He was untied in marriage to Margaret Herven at Sheldon on Feb. 13, 1890 and to this union nine children were born as follows: Frank, Will, Claire and Elsie all of Rock Valley: Maye Mrs. Charles Schmidt Sioux City; Paul, Canton, SD; and Ethel Sioux Falls SD, Joseph was killed in a train auto accident in March 1930.
Mr. Barry was highly respected citizen good husband, Father and neighbor. Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s church here on Monday morning solemnized by Rev. A. J. Forster and interment was at St. Mary’s cemetery.OBITUARY OF MRS. MARGARET BARRY
MRS. MARGARET BARRY Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church in Rock Valley for Mrs. Margaret Barry, 88, who passed away Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Haas at Iowa Falls, after a long illness. Father Edward Hoffman officiated and burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery at Rock Valley Mrs. Barry was born December 21, 1869, at Des Moines. She later moved to this vicinity and resided on a farm northwest of Rock Valley for 68 years. She had been living at the Haas home in Iowa Falls for the past year and a half. Survivors include three other daughters: Mrs. Charles Schmitt Chicago, Marjorie Barry of Rock Valley and Ethyle Barry of Sioux Falls; three sons Paul and Claire of Rock Valley and William of Hoyt Lake, MN; a brother, Edward Hevern of Rock Valley; two half sisters; Mrs. Mary Murphy of Rock Valley and Mrs. T. J. Gunter Cara City, MN; a half brother Joe Langan of Aurora, S. D., as well as ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
