Manning, Andrew 1860-1933 and Elizabeth Solon Family

This story was taken from page 117 of the Rock Valley St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book written for the centennial of the church in about 1982(?). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

ANDREW MANNING was born in Highland, Wisconsin. He married ELIZABETH SOLON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick L. Solon, on May 23, 1900 in old St. Mary’s Church. She was born in March, 1871. They lived on the farm homesteaded by Patrick Solon three miles west and two miles north of Rock Valley. They had seven children:

1. IVAN D. MANNING married Gen Bruzer of Rock Rapids. He is deceased. They have two sons: Dennis, living in Des Moines, and Douglas living in Bear Valley, California.

2. LAVINA married Lee O’Kelly and they are living in Newport Beach, California. She has a stepson.

3. DAISY married Judge J. Connelly. They lived in Pueblo, Colorado. Daisy is deceased. They had one son, Patrick J. Connelly of San Diego, California.

4. ETHEL ANN died as a young child.

5. CLARENCE died during his high school years.

6. EUGENE married Leona Krammer of Bancroft, Iowa. He was a mortician in Sioux City. Both are deceased. They had three adopted children: Mary Zeller, Dixon, Illinois, Michael and Dennis who are attorneys in Phoenix.

7. URSALA was the first one baptized in the new St. Mary’s Church. She married Harold Gumma, Denver, Colorado. He is deceased. She lives in Norfolk, Nebraska. They had four sons: Michael of Westboro, Mass., Mitchell, Neenah, Wisconsin, William of Houston, Texas and Justin of Boulder, Colorado.

He was the son of William Manning 1818-1902 and Catherine Griffin 1827-1893. He married Elizabeth Margaret Solon born 13 May 1873 Rock Valley IA, died & Dec 1949 Rock Valley IA. She was the daughter of Patrick Lydon Solon 1846-1920 and Mary Annette McGuire 1845-1920.
Their children were
1 . Ivan D. Manning 26 Mar 1901 Highland WI died 6 Nov 1953 Rock Rapids IA. He married Genevieve Bruzer 1910-1997
2 . Lavina Mary Manning born 1 Sep 1902 Highland WI died 31 Oct 1985 Newport Beach CA. She married Lee Waldo O’Kelly 1905-1992

OBITUARY OF ANDREW MANNING

Funeral services for Andrew Manning who died at his home Tuesday afternoon, May 16th, at 9 o’clock A.M. Reverend A.J. Foerster officiated. Interment was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Mr. Manning was born August 14, 1860 at Highland, Wisconsin and moved from there to Iowa in 1909. He was a kind and home loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed at home and by friends. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Solon, May 23, 1900.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Manning, two sons, Ivan and Eugene, and three daughters, La Vina, Daisy and Ursula, also a sister, Mrs. Lewis Herzog of Mitchell, South Dakota. Two children preceded him in death, Clarence and Ethel Ann.
Honorary pallbearers selected for the services were Thomas Cullinan, Sr., John Higgins, Charles Hass, Andrew Van Kley and Ed Hevern. Active pallbearers were Raymond Keegan, Earl Heffernan, Walter McNamara, Gerald Hevern, Vincent Crowley and Robert Buckley.

McEnroe and children, Gerald and Patricia and Miss McEnroe of Algona, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Solan and sons, Harold and Wayne; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Whalen; Max Middlin of Larchwood; Mr. and Mrs. J. Solan and son, Carl, and Miss Bridget Fitzpatrick of Madison, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Mann and daughter, Madelyn of Doon; Mrs. Martin Buckley and Mr. and Mrs. James Flannigan of Rock Rapids; Sam Moser and daughter, Louise, and Christine Knoblock of Lester; John Linnan of Maurice.
The funeral was directed by Perasso Bros. of Sioux City, Iowa.

Died: 12-9-1949
Last rites for Mrs. Elizabeth Manning, 76, former Rock Valley resident were held here Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Mrs. Manning died in Sioux City last Friday, December 9. She had resided in Sioux City for the past 10 years.
Mrs. Manning was born March 13, 1873, in Rock Valley, Iowa. She had resided here most of her life until moving to Sioux City although she lived a few years in Highland, Wis. She was married May 23, 1900, in Rock Valley to the late Andrew W. Manning.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lavina O'Kelley of Balboa, Calif., and Mrs. Daisy Connelly and Mrs. Ursula Gumma of Pueblo, Colo; two sons, Ivan D. of Rock Rapids and Eugene P. of Sioux City; seven grandsons; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Murdock of Big Piney, Wyo, Mrs. Emma Cauley of Los Angeles, Mrs. Kathryn McEnroe of Algona, Ia., and Mrs. Bell Vrang of Evanston, Wyo., and two brothers, Thomas Solon of Winfred, S.D. and Matt of Los Angeles.
Mrs. Manning was a member of St. Jean Baptiste Catholic Church in Sioux City and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
