This story was taken from page 95 of the Rock Valley St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book written for the centennial of the church in about 1982(?). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

EDWARD T. HEVERN was born in 1886> (1866) in Illinois. At an early age, he came to Iowa with his parents. Later, he settled on a farm northwest of Rock Valley. He married KATHRYN FITZPATRICK, who was born in Iowa in 1875. Mr. and Mrs. Hevern were early parishioners of St. Mary’s.

To this union four children were born: Leo, who died in infancy, Francis, who died in North Dakota in 1930 where he lived with his wife, Josephine and four children, Maxine, Francis, John and Russell. Also Joseph and James who now reside in Rock Valley, and are members of St. Mary’s parish.

After the death of his wife Kathryn in 1902, he married Mary Nugent of Elkader, Iowa in 1907. She also preceded him in death in 1928.

In 1959, after a long illness, Ed died at the age of 92 in the home of his son, Joseph in Rock Valley where he lived for many years. Ed’s funeral Mass celebrant was Father Edward Hoffman and Ed is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

His parents were William John Hevern 1843 -1869 and Margaret Coffey 1843-1927. He married Catherine Theresa Fitzpatrick born 22 May 1875 Littleport IA and died 20 Feb 1902 Rock Valley IA. Her parents were James Fitzpatrick 1840 and Mary 1852. The children listed were – Francis Leo Hevern 1897-1897, James Edward Hevern 1898-1985, Joseph Bernard Hevern 1899-1983, Francis William Hevern 1902-1931.

OBITUARY OF EDWARD T. HEVERN
From the Alton Democrat of Oct 29, 1959 Rock Valley News.
E. (Edward) T. Hevern, 92, were held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church with Father Edward Hoffman officiating.
Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery.
He died at his farm house west of town Thursday after six o'clock in the evening after a long illness.
He was born Nov. 18, 1866 at Kankakee, Illinois, and came to this country in his youth. He has farmed in the Rock Valley area for 65 years.
He was married to Catherine Fitzpatrick and after her death to Mary Nugent, who preceded him in death. In his first marriage four sons were born to him, Leo, James. Joe and Francis.
Leo died in infancy and Francis in 1930.
Mr. Hevern served as township trustee for almost 50 years and was president of the telephone
company and interested, in the development of the township and county.
Survivors include two sons, Joe and James, both of Rock Valley; two half sisters, Mrs. Mary Munphy of Rock Valley and Mrs. Clara Gunter of Clara City, Minn.; a half brother, Joe Langen of Aurora, S. Dak., 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A brother, Frank Hevern and sister. Mrs. Margaret Hevern and half sisters, Mrs. Delia Donohoe and Gertie Langan preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were Fiancis Mc Namara, John Cullinan, Robert Thayer, Emmet Scanlan, Jerome Haas all of Rock Valley, and John Clancy of Madison, S. Dak.

OBITUARY OF KATHERINE HEVERN
Hevern, Katherine Theresa (Mrs. Edward) born 22 May 1875 Iowa died 28 Feb 1902 Rock Valley IA, buried in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Rock Valley IA. No obit was readily found.
Note: See the obir of her husband Edward T. Hevern 1866-1959. She was Katherine Fitzpatrick daughter of James Fitzatrick and Mary Ellen Linnane. They had four children : Francis Leo 1897-1897, James 1898, Joseph 1899, and Francis 1902-1931.

OBITURY OF MARY NUGENT - MRS. ED T. HEVERN
Born: June 18, 1865
Died: September 14, 1928

DEATH OF MRS. EDD HEVERN
On Saturday morning September 14, at 12:45 the angel of death visited the home of Ed. Hevern taking his beloved wife just a few hours after the death of his brother, Frank. She became ill early in June and was a patient sufferer perfectly resigned to the will of God.
Mollie Nugent was born near Elkader, Iowa, June 18, 1865, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage with Edd Hevern April 8, 1907, and resided on a farm northwest of Rock Valley until her death.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, three brothers, Henry of Elkader, Joseph of California, and T. F. Gunter of Clara City, Minn.
Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s Church, Tuesday morning, Reverend Father O’Rielly officiating and the remains were laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Her funeral was largely attended by friends and neighbors showing the high esteem in which she was held in the neighborhood.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Gunter, of Clara City, Minn., Henry Nugent and Florence Loftus, of Elkader and Mason City, Francis Hevern of Hillsboro, N.D., Carer Roberts, Ethan, S.D., Henry and James Donahoe and Mrs. Guilleane of Sheldon, Frank Freeland, Freeland Park [state torn out], Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Fitzpatrick and sister Bridget, of Madison, S.D., Mrs. Langen and daughter Mildred of Aurora, S.D.
