OBITUARY OF LOUIS HENNINGFELD
From the Rock Valley Bee, October 11, 1912:
LEWIE T HENNINGFELD
Pioneer of Sioux County Died Wednesday of Cancer of the Stomach
Lewie T. Henningfeld died at his home in Rock Valley Wednesday afternoon [October 9] at eleven o'clock. He suffered from a cancer of the stomach. He was taken sick during the fore part of July and he failed gradually until the end came Wednesday forenoon.
Mr. Henningfeld was one of the pioneers of Sioux county. He had lived in Rock Valley and vicinity for over thirty years. The following is a brief sketch of his life. He was born at Waterford, Wis. February 17, 1855 and was at the time of his death fifty-seven years, seven months and twenty-two days old. When he was fourteen years of age his parents moved to Burlington, Wis., where he lived until the spring of 1881, when he came to Sioux county and settled on a farm four miles northwest of Rock Valley where he lived until February 1911 when he came to Rock Valley where he built one of the nicest residences in town and was ready to enjoy life after his thirty years of hard work on the farm. His new home was hardly finished until his health began to fail.
The deceased was married at Burlington, Wis., in January 1881 to Miss Katherine Rach. To this union were born eight children four of whom are living. They are Charles, Louise, Lawrence and Julius, all of whom were at home at the time of their father's death.
Besides his wife the deceased leaves to mourn two brothers, Henry Henningfeld of Rock Valley and another brother and sister living in Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Mary's church conducted by Rev. Father O'Rielly.

From the Alton Democrat, October 19, 1912, Rock Valley news:
In last week's issue of the Democrat we reported the serious illness of Lewis Henningfield, with cancer of the stomach. Wednesday morning Oct. 9th he bade adieu to loved ones and passed from the busy stage of action, and forever disappeared behind the curtain of mortality, in the fifty-fifth year of his age.
He was of German extraction and was born at Waterford, Wis., later with his parents he removed to Burlington, Wis., where he grew to manhood, and in January 1881 was married to Miss Katherine Rach, and the same year he and his young wife, with bright hopes and happy anticipations, came to Sioux county and located on a farm west of Rock Valley, where by industry and economy they succeeded in acquiring a competency. They were the parents of eight children, four of whom survive him.
After spending thirty years of strenuous life in tilling the soil, he moved to Rock Valley about a year ago, and built him a magnificent residence with modern improvements in the east part of town, but was not permitted to enjoy its comforts very long as a gracious providence saw fit to remove him to that bourne from whence none ever returns. He was a devout member of the Catholic church.
The funeral services occurred at the Catholic church Saturday morning under the supervision of the pastor, Rev. John O'Reilly, in the presence of a large gathering of neighbors and sympathizing friends, after which his remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery, south of town. The bereaved friends have the sympathy of the community in their hour of sorrow.
