Bernard (Barney) Doherty 1870-1943 and Sarah Bridget Linnan Family

This story was taken from page 66 of the Rock Valley St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book written for the centennial of the church in about 1982(?). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

Bernard (Barney) Matthew Doherty was born July 18, 1870, at Lyons, Iowa, to Michael Doherty and Ellen Develin. Then he was 17 years old he came to Maurice, Iowa, to join his two brothers, Pat and Dan.

He was married to Sarah Bridget Linnan, a teacher in the Maurice area schools, on June 12, 1897. They farmed three miles south of Maurice, where Ellen Margaret was born February 2, 1899. They bought a farm one mile east of Rock Valley and moved there in March of 1901. On July 30, 1902, Genevieve Esther was born there.

On March 10, 1909, Joseph Bernard was born, but he lived only four weeks. His mother, Sarah, died on March 24, 1909. Both are buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Rock Valley. After Sarah’s death, her sister, Mary Linnan, came into the home and helped the family for ten years. Barney continued to farm until 1932, when he retired and rented his farm.

He was always very interested in St. Mary’s Church and School. Both girls attended and graduated from St. Mary’s School. Barney also served as trustee when the present church was built. He was very proud of the beautiful building and grounds. He died November 25, 1943, and is buried in the family plot in the local cemetery.

Ellen graduated from Iowa State Teachers College and taught several years before entering government work in the Health & Education Department in Washington, D.C. She retired in 1968 and lived in Clarion before her death on March 9, 1978. Her funeral was held in St. Mary’s Church on March 13, 1978, and she is at rest in the local cemetery.

Genevieve also attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, and taught in Laurens, Eagle Grove and Emmetsburg. She married F. Leo Porter on October 4, 1927, at St. Mary’s Church in Rock Valley, and they have lived in Clarion, Iowa, since then. They have two children: Patrick Francis who lives in Fort Dodge, Iowa and Sara Kaye, who lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

OBITUARY OF SARAH DOHERTY
Alton Democrat March 27, 1909
Pat Moran and Dan Doherty and Luke Fitzpatrick and Will and Hugh McDonald and John Crowley were in Alton Wednesday in route home to Maurice from Rock Valley where they attended the funeral of Mrs. Barney Doherty who died Monday.
Deceased was thirty one years of age and was a daughter of the late Pat Linnan of Maurice vicinity. She was married to Barney Doherty eleven years ago and three children have been born to them. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Reilly. Attending from abroad were Henry Wiley and Mrs. Joseph Turan and Mike Lucy and wife of Clayton county. She leaves a brother—John Linnan of Maurice and four sisters. They are Mrs. Thomas Cullinan and Miss Mary Linnan and Mrs. Robert McCool of Rock Valley and Mrs. Pat Cullinan of Gary South Dakota,
The funeral was large. Our Rock Valley correspondent said of this sad death: Sarah Doherty nee Linnan wife of Barney Doherty was born near Maurice Iowa August sixteenth 1877 where she grew to womanhood and died at her home near Rock Valley March twenty second 1909 aged thirty one years seven months and six days. Deceased was married August sixteenth 1897 and this union was blessed with three children two daughters and one son he being bereft of the tender care of a loving mother when such care was needed.
But we must bow in humble submission to him who does all things well. Death is pregnant with mysteries past conception the dread of which is as natural as it is universal. The dark insignia of his power are everywhere seen and no one can elude his search as he pursues them from the cradle to the grave. The deceased has yielded reluctantly to the inevitable and has stepped from life's busy stage and disappeared forever behind the curtain of immortality. To those who knew and were intimately associated with her good qualities far outweigh any fault she may have possessed and she will ever be remembered as a true friend. Her husband will ever cherish her as a dutiful companion and a faithful mother. Besides her husband and children she leaves four sisters namely Miss Mary Linnan and Mrs. Tom Cullinan and Mrs. Robert McCool of Rock Valley and Mrs. Pat Cullinan of Gary South Dakota and one brother John Linnan of Maurice all of whom were present to lay the last tribute of respect to their departed sister.
The funeral services were held from St, Mary's Catholic church Wednesday morning conducted by the pastor Rev, Edward O'Rielly, A large concourse of neighbors and friends followed her remains to their last resting place which was but an indication of the respect and high esteem in which she was held in the community. We extend our sympathy to the loved ones in this their hour of extreme sorrow.

The picture below assumed to be their wedding picture was taken from the St. Mary’s Church book.
