Wyffels, John B. 1837-1910 and Coleta Mabesoone Family
This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book (p. 63) written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.
The homeland of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Wyffels was in the province of Zeeland of the Netherlands. They boarded ship at Pleotselizh Bestwer Van Oostburg, Zeeland and landed in the United States on February 23, 1887 with their family of six boys and three girls. For one year they lived in Garfield Township, Section 2. Then they moved to Plato, Township, Section 7, Northeast, and took possession of this farm, which became their home until moving to Rock Valley.
The John Wyffels left the farm to their son, Phillip, who married Julianna Minnaert on January 26, 1909, and to this union was born nine children. Phillip farmed the land until 1943. Then the land was worked by his two sons, Edward and John. Edward passed away in 1970 and the farm was left to John Wyffels, who is still farming the land at the present time. Thus, the farm has been in the possession of and farmed by Weffels family members for eighty-eight years. Mrs. Ted Ranshcu is a daughter of the Phillip Ranchaus.

Born October 4, 1837
Died October 15, 1910
After a lingering illness of several months John B. Wyffels, one of the early settlers of Sioux County died at his home in Rock Valley Saturday evening Oct 15,1910, his death being caused by cancer of the liver from which he was a great sufferer.
The subject of this sketch was born at Aandenberg in the province of Zeeland, Holland, October 4,1837 and was at the time of his death 73 years and 11 days old. His early life was spent at his home in Zeeland. He was married on Sept. 14? 1865 at Oostburg, Netherlands to Coleta Mabesoone?? who still survives her husband. To this union were born twelve children, seven boys and five girls, all of whom are still living except John who was killed in a railroad crossing accident on the summer of 1895?. He was 25 years of age at the time.
The children are; Mrs. Emily Baarkemaker, Lyon N.Y. Mrs. Boba De Rider, Doon, Ia Jacob B. Wyffels, Rock Valley, Ben I. Wyffels, Ghent Minnesota, Isedore A. Wyffels, Rock Valley, Mrs. Stena Sanders, Rock Valley, Edward J. Wyffels, Rock Valley, Mrs. Nellie Braat, Rock Valley, Mrs. Emma Splear, Rock Valley, Phillip Wyffels, Rock Valley, Henry Wyffels, Rock Valley, Iowa, all of whom were present at the bedside of their father during his last hours with the exception of Mrs. Emily Baarkemaker, who on account of her great distance away was not able to be here.
Mr. Wyffels and his family came to America in the spring of 1887? coming directly to Sioux County where he bought a piece of land and farmed it until about 18 months ago when he moved to Rock Valley, where he had made his home up to the time of his death. He was one of Sioux County's early settlers and was one who did his share to help make the county what it is today. He and his family experienced all the hardships incidental to pioneer life, which only pioneers who have endured the privations and hardships can appreciate. Times have changed wonderfully since then. In this time of abundance of everything the younger generation know nothing of what the pioneer endured as he went about poorly clothed and sometimes hungry, harvested corn stalks, and twisted hay for fuel in his home which were unprotected from the severe storms of winter.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from St. Mary's Church in Rock Valley conducted by Rev. Father O'Reilly, and the remains were buried in the Catholic Cemetery south of town. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.OBITUARY OF COLETTA WYFFELS
