Rozeboom Family and Farm

Rozeboom, Will 1888-1955 and Josie Wesselink

Also Rozeboom, Henry B. 1918-1993 and Gertrude Kooima Family and Farm

This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. Story found on pages 59 and 60. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.

Will Rozeboom bought a 120 acre farm from Ed Moss in 1917, Plato Township, Southwest corner of Section 10, three miles south, one mile east, and a half mile south of Rock Valley. At that time Will Rozeboom, his wife, and family were living one and one-half miles southeast of the farm he purchased.

In 1919 the newly purchased farm was rented to Mr. Feikema for one year, and the Rozebooms, along with their two young sons, Willis and Henry, moved to a small acreage at Sioux Center, Iowa. Here a daughter, Anna Marie (now Mrs. George Van Beek), joined the Rozeboom family. During the time the family lived in Sioux Center, Will traveled a beautiful dapple-gray Percheron stallion.

Then the slump came! Will sold the stallion and traded the acreage for a line of Emerson farm machinery and in 1921 the family moved to the farm which he had purchased in 1917. Here two more daughters, Harriet and Verna Mae, became family members. All five of the Will Rozeboom children graduated from the Rock Valley High School.

In 1941, Mr. and Mrs. Will Rozeboom moved to Rock Valley, and their son, Henry, and Gertrude Kooima were married. Henry and his wife took over the farming, and later bought the farm. In 1958 Henry increased the farm acreage by purchasing a forty along the south side of the farm. Henry and Gertrude have spent their entire married life on the family farm, and Henry has spent all, except for a few very young years, of his entire life on the farm.

The Henry Rozebooms have four children, Lyle married Carol Van Voorst, and they are living in Brooklyn, New York, with their two sons, Nathan and Aaron; and Linda, who is married to Stan Van Peursem. They have two children, Dustin and Heather, and the family lives in Sioux City, Iowa; Dennis married Cathy Mouw. They have one son, Noah, and are living in Hospers, Iowa. Donita is married to Gary De Bruin, and they are living at Ames, Iowa. All four children were graduates of the Rock Valley High School.

The only original building on the farm is the barn. From 1926 until recently, several new structures have been built: a corn crib, silo, garage, hog house, machine shed, house, and steel corn cribs.
