Vogelzang Fred 1849-1920 and Geertje Sypersma Family Farm

This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book (p. 61) written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.

For seventy-nine years, three generations of Vogelzangs, Fred, Simon, and Fred Simon, have owned, farmed, and lived on the Vogelzang Farm.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Vogelzang, and their three-year-old son, Simon, came from Holland, and in 1897, Fred bought 160 acres of land in Garfield township southwest corner of Section 14, four miles west and five miles south of Rock Valley for $30 per acre.

Thirty-one years later, in 1928, Simon purchased the farm. He married Coba Dykstra, and three members of their family are living in the Rock Valley community, namely, Fred Simon, Sam and Mrs. Dwight Wallace.

Fred Simon bought the family farm in March of 1963. He and his wife, Tena Zigtema, are the parents of five children, namely, Marlene, who lost her life due to a sleighing accident at eight years of age; Fred, Jr. (“Bud”), who travels for Johnny’s Electric of Sioux Center; Donna, Mrs. Arie Vande Vegte of Rock Valley; Judith, Mrs. Douglas De Graaf of Rock Valley; and Steve, a graduate of ISU in Ames. The three oldest children attended Garfield No. 6 until the rural schools closed, and then attended the Rock Valley Community School. The two youngest children spent all of their school days at Rock Valley.

The farm house is old, and originally had only two rooms. Mr. and Mrs. Fred S. Vogelzang have spent their entire married life, forty-three years, on the Vogelzang Farm

The deceased was a man well thought of by all who knew him, and friends of the family extend to them heart felt sympathy in their bereavement.
