Survived by: Sons, Steve (spouse, Carolue) Klitgaard of Pocatello, ID, and Dr. Don (spouse, Laurel) Klitgaard of Harlan, IA; daughter, Jane (spouse, Larry) Buck of Lime Springs, IA; sister, Darlene Taylor of Florissant, MO; son-in-law, Joel Schwery of Lenexa, KS; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Andrew Christian and Gladys Maude (nee Havick) Klitgaard; wife, Mary Klitgaard (deceased April 21, 2009); daughter, Barb Schwery; brother, Howard Klitgaard; grandchildren, Heidi Witthoft and Kaleb Witthoft; great-grandson, Stephen Bowman

Education: Attended Harlan (IA) public schools and graduated from Harlan High School, Class of 1948. His high school activities included class officer, junior and senior class plays, Hi-Y, Harpoon yearbook editor, Boy’s State Delegate, and 4-year letter winner in track. After graduation, he attended Iowa State College at Ames, IA, where he enrolled in architectural engineering. He had completed 2 years there before enlisting in the Air Force.

Religious affiliation: Member, First United Methodist Church, Harlan, IA; he had served there as a trustee and a member of the building committee.

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Air Force on Jan. 3, 1951; was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, for 4 years as a math instructor. Honorably discharged.

Marriage: Mary Ellen Petersen; May 18, 1951; Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville, IA

Employment: After completing his military service, Richard began working with his father as a general contractor. In 1960, he purchased his father’s share in the company, Klitgaard and Petsche Contracting, and ran that business until 1980 when it became Klitgaard Construction. Richard retired in 1993.

Hobbies/Interests: Loved hunting, fishing, and camping, including trips to Canada. After he retired, Richard enjoyed gardening, having coffee with friends, baking, and continuing to fish.
