Employment: During high school, Allen began working for Purina Feed Company and stayed until 1969, at which time he became employed at Harlan (IA) Builders. In 1997, Allen and Mark Garrett bought Harlan Builders and owned it until the business was sold again in 2013; Allen then retired at that time.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed camping, traveling, fishing and golfing; he became a member of the Harlan Volunteer Fire Department in Nov. 1980 and became captain in 1985, a position he held until he retired in 1991.
