Employment: After completing high school, she worked in Creston, IA using her secretarial and bookkeeping skills; after her marriage, they moved to Cherokee, IA, where she worked as a secretary at a mental hospital. When they relocated to Des Moines, IA, she worked at a Hy-Vee grocery store as a bookkeeper. Eventually, the family relocated to Harlan, IA, where Mary held a variety of jobs during these years in Harlan, often more than one job at a time, to help support the family. Her final employment was at Communications Data Services (CDS), from which she retired in 2006.

Hobbies/Interests: After high school, she participated in various community theatre productions; she loved music and animals, but her family was her main priority
