Funeral services: Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, Altamont Baptist Church, Harlan, IA; Pastor Diana Holland officiated. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, IA.

Survived by: Daughter, Bernadine Kay Ames of Caldwell, ID; sons, Bert David Cox of Rushville, MO and Bernard Keith (spouse, Dawn) Cox, Jr. of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Will Ames (spouse, Carissa), Brandi Mertens (spouse, Joe), Angela Mitchell (spouse, Bruce), Bert David Cox, Jr. (spouse, Emily) and Jared Cox; great-grandchildren, Alan, Alexandria, Cameo, Ender, Leigh, Peytan, and Zoe; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Bert Howard and Esther Vivian (nee McKeighan) Cox; wife of 63 years, Harriet (deceased Aug. 19, 2005); sons, Bert Jay and Berle Jay

Education: attended school in Tennant, IA where he graduated from Tennant High School. He later attended the Municipal University of Omaha (University of Nebraska - Omaha) where he studied mechanical engineering.

Religious affiliation: Throughout the years he has been a member of the Tennant Methodist, Bethel Baptist, First Baptist, where he taught the Adult Sunday School class for approximately twenty years, then New Nope, and finally the Altamont Baptist Church.

Marriage: Harriet Elaine Brauch; June 7, 1942; Omaha, NE

Employment: Upon the outbreak of World War II, Bernard returned to Tennant to help run the grain elevator which was the family business. After his marriage, they continued to operate the Tennant Elevator, which later became the Cox Grain Company. He was the first fertilizer dealer in the area and was the President of a NH3 and CO2 manufacturing facility named Green Valley Chemical based in Creston, IA.

Hobbies/Interests: member, 8 Ball Club at the Harlan Airport and owned and flew a red Mooney Super 21 for many years; at this time, he was also a member of the Flying Farmers. He owned and operated a Stanley Steamer for several years and took it in several parades in the area.
