Funeral services: Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, Pauley Jones Funeral Home, Avoca, IA; Pastor Brian Wohlhuter officiated. Burial was in the Minden Cemetery, Minden, IA.

Survived by: Wife of 56 days, Darlene of Harlan, IA; children, Richard Schuning (spouse, Dyan) of Neola, IA; Diane (spouse, Calvin) Nielsen of Harlan, IA and Marilyn (spouse, Pat) McKeighan of Council Bluffs, IA; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (spouse, Virgil) Hoff of Fountain, CO; sister-in-law, Velma Lubbe of Harlan, IA; brother-in-law, George Kardell of Dallas, TX; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Orvel and Margaret (nee Ehlers) Schuning; sister, Ramona Kardell.

Education: attended country school and then Minden High School; graduated with the Class of 1947. He played basketball for Minden High School and was "Athlete of the Year."

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed in the old Minden Congregational Church, Minden, IA

Employment: While in school, Derald always walked out to his Grandfather Schuning's farm to help on the weekends. Farming was his first love and he bought a used tractor, plow and two row corn picker so he could custom work around the area. He also baled hay for many farmers. Once he was married, they started farming on Rev. John Frieboes's farm west of Oakland. After that, they lived in the Carson, Treynor and Persia areas before moving to Harlan in 1996. Derald was a seed corn salesman and supervisor for 44 years, making many friends whom he cherished. He and his wife and children raised many hogs over the years and saw numerous changes in the livestock business.

Hobbies/Interests: Derald played basketball on a Minden Town Team after graduation. Derald spent many hours watching his grandchildren play sports. He attended many football games, basketball and volleyball games and his grandchildren would only need to look up in the bleachers to see their grandpa there. He also loved to listen to his granddaughter, Jessica, sing. Lately his most favorite sport was stock car racing. He attended many races every Saturday night with his daughter Marilyn and had a favorite driver in every race. His favorite NASCAR driver was Jeff Gordon. Derald and his children enjoyed riding horses and rode in many area parades and trail rides.
