Funeral services: Thursday, July 17, 2008, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, IA; Pastor Steven Chellew officiated. Burial was held in the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, IA.

Survived by: Husband of 48 years, John Schuning of Harlan, IA; children, Janelle (spouse, Kurt) Musfeldt of Harlan, IA; Craig Schuning (spouse, Karla) of Shawnee, KS; and Trent Schuning (spouse, Traci) of Portsmouth, IA; grandchildren, Chelsea Musfeldt; Thane Schuning (spouse, Nicole), and Taylor, Tifani, and Taryn Schuning; sisters, Myrna (spouse, Fred) Anthony, Jr. of Pella, IA and Jean (spouse, Richard) Woods of Trenton, MO; brother, Dale Niklasen (spouse, Betty) of Kimballton, IA; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends

Education: attended country school at Sharon #4 through Grade 8; then attended Elk Horn-Kimballton (IA) High School, and graduated with the Class of 1956. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, IA, graduating in 1958

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton, IA

Employment: began her teaching career with the second grade in Avoca, IA. She was also the girls’ basketball chaperone. Doris taught for many years in the Harlan (IA) Community School District until her youngest child was born; she then became a full-time mom. She later returned to work in the Harlan School District as a teacher’s aide, office assistant, and playground teacher until she retired in 2000.

Hobbies/Interests: enjoyed quilting with the gals at the Senior Center, reading, and playing solitaire on the computer. She loved traveling, especially to Texas or Arizona in the winter months. Her grandkids were important to her and she attended all of their activities. She canned vegetables and was an excellent cook, and loved to share her goodies with family and friends. She was an active volunteer for the Bloodmobile, American Cancer Society board, Relay For Life committee and Hospice. She and John helped a lot of people through the years by driving them to treatments, visiting, and offering encouragement. She took school pictures every fall for many years, did clerical work for the church and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Some of her favorite times were taco night at the Westphalia Clubhouse and the daily Burger King coffee club. For many years she did beautiful artwork and gave her paintings away to family and friends who still cherish them.
