Burial, with Military Rites conducted by the Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 547, was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth, IA.

Survived by: Wife of 57 years, Thelma Schoemann of Portsmouth, IA; children, Greg Schoemann (spouse, Denise) of Ceres, CA, Dave Schoemann (spouse, Dale) of Cedar Falls, IA, Ann Mellinger of Harlan, IA, Pat Schoemann of Portsmouth, IA, Barb Kleymann of Persia, IA, Jeff Schoemann (spouse, Velvet) of Avoca, IA, Janet (spouse, Danny) Sharp of Huntsville, AL, Rita Griffen of Portsmouth, IA, and Bill Schoemann of Tahoka, TX; 23 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Pauley of Panama, IA, Sister Mary Schoemann of LaCrosse, WI, and Ceil (spouse, Vic) Langer of Arvada, CO; brothers, John Schoemann of Portsmouth, IA and Father Bob Schoemann of Des Moines, IA; other family members and friends.

Education: attended Pleasant Ridge Country School (Shelby County, IA) and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School, Portsmouth, IA.

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa

Military service: He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sep. 15, 1950 and served until his honorable discharge on Sep. 14, 1952.

Marriage: Thelma Louise Campbell; Feb. 12, 1953 in Portsmouth, IA

Employment: After his discharge from the Army, he became a truck driver and drove in and around the Portsmouth area for 25 - 30 years.

Hobbies/Interests: Gene looked forward to springtime every year so he could begin his gardening and mushroom hunting. He raised popcorn and loved the family fishing trips to Minnesota, as well as traveling all over the country to visit his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed the family card games (Hearts was his favorite) and the famous Pitch games at The Rocket in Portsmouth. Being part of the American Legion and the Volunteer Fire Department was very important in his life.
