Funeral services: Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Harlan, IA; Rev. Robert Hoefler officiated. Burial was in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Westphalia, IA.

Survived by: Husband of 64 years, Joseph Schomer; children, Joe Schomer, Jr. of Daytona Beach, FL, Mary (spouse, Myron) Goodman of Salisbury, NC, Rose (spouse, Kenneth) Nielsen of LaCanada, CA, Pat (spouse, Mike) Laas of Bettendorf, IA, Kathleen Kohorst of Harlan, IA, and Stephan (spouse, Tammy) Schomer of Iowa City, IA; 19 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, John and Helen (nee Rosman) Buman; siblings, Edwin Buman, Corrine Anastasi, Wanda Jurshack, and Kenneth Buman.

Education: attended grade school and graduated from high school in Tennant, IA. She went on to attend college at St. Mary’s, Notre Dame in IN, and Duschene in Omaha, NE.

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth, IA.

Marriage: Joseph Schomer; June 22, 1943; St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, IA

Employment: After completing her education, she taught Grades 3 and 4 in Tennant, IA, for 6 years, until her marriage. Joe and Bernice lived on the family farm until 1999 when they moved into Harlan, IA

Hobbies/Interests: She was a very loving mother and mentor to her children and was involved in her children’s activities. She was a 4-H leader for the Lincoln Bluebirds. She taught religious education at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, read to the residents at Elm Crest Retirement Center, and served on the Community Chest Board. Bernice loved to sew and made special cross-stitched articles for the Baptisms, First Communions and Marriages of her grandchildren. She loved flowers of all kinds and spent many hours in her gardens. Bernice was an excellent cook and baker and known for her sweet rolls and bread.
