Earl M. Mutum - Age 62

Earl Manford Mutum was born on March 9, 1951 in Atlantic, Iowa to Ivol and Esther (Harmsen) Mutum. He was raised on the family farm northeast of Walnut, Iowa. He attended the Walnut school and graduated with the Class of 1969.

After high school, Earl spent 4 years in the United States Air Force, serving in Japan during the Vietnam War, until his honorable discharge in 1974.

Earl worked at the Oakland Beef Plant until it closed. He then lived a vagabond lifestyle doing his “own thing.” Earl enjoyed playing cards, a good game of pool and reading. He recently entered veterans care before moving to Peace Haven Retirement Home in Walnut in the Spring of 2013. Earl was a kind hearted man, but a lost and lonely soul.

Earl died on May 20, 2013 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of sixty-two years, two months and eleven days. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his sister Carol and her husband Arnie Sampson of Avoca, Iowa; nephews: Matthew Sampson and his wife Elaine of Morgantown, West Virginia and their children Noah and Rachel, Jason Sampson and his wife Linda of Pikeville, North Carolina and their children Kirsten, Makayla and Nolan, and Aaron Sampson and his wife Jeanette of Fayetteville, North Carolina and their daughter Mackenzie; other relatives and friends.

Pastor Nancy Ross-Hullinger officiated the 3 PM graveside service on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Monroe Township Cemetery in rural Walnut, Iowa. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion Post No. 422.
