V. L. "Butch" Miller - Age 92

Verrow Louis "Butch" Miller was born August 20, 1920, in Carroll, Iowa, to Irving and Tena (Weber) Miller. He lived his first fifteen years on a farm near Logan, Iowa, with his grandparents Reiner and Emma Weber. He attended school at Logan.

After coming to Persia, Butch drove a gas truck and a livestock truck for M. A. Champlin. In 1942, he went to California to work at Zin Meyer Co. Bomber Plant. In 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Army. Butch served in the Infantry in the European Theater during WWII. He served in England and France where he received the Purple Heart in LaHarve, France, and was honorably discharged in December of 1945.

On April 15, 1944, Butch married Lucille Shriver. He purchased a portable mill and later had his own business in livestock hauling and corn shelling. In 1969, Butch went to work for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Neola, Iowa, where he was employed for sixteen years. Butch was a township clerk, city council member, Legionnaire for sixty-six years, firefighter for thirty-four years (fire chief for eleven years). Butch enjoyed chauffeuring his grandchildren to their events, fishing, gardening, reading, carpentry, collecting coins and antique shopping.

Butch died on October 10, 2012, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month and twenty days. In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 2009; granddaughter Elyse Miller in 2003; sister Laura "Jeanne" Bladt in January of 2012 and several in-laws.

Butch is survived by his three sons: Stanley and his wife Linda Miller of Loveland, Colorado; Glenn "Bubba" Miller of Richmond, California and Gale "Chub" Miller and his wife Denise of Persia, Iowa; three grandchildren: Kelsey Miller of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Nathan Miller and Ian Miller both of Persia, Iowa; two sisters: Delores and her husband Don Spracklin of Valley, Nebraska; Donna and her husband Dennis McKean of Papillion, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.

Pastor Orris Drake officiated the 1:30 PM funeral service on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the Persia Methodist Church in Persia, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were his sons Stan Mill, Glenn "Bubb" Miller, and Gale "Chub" Miller, and his grandchildren Kelsey Miller, Nathan Miller, and Ian Miller. Persia American Legion Post No. 314 performed Military Rites at Valley View Cemetery in rural Persia.
