Virgil R. Miller - Age 87

Virgil Robert Miller was born on March 1, 1925 to Robert and Bessie (Hillers) Miller on a farm in Union Township near Logan, Iowa. He attended country school through the eighth grade when he began helping his father full time on the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Lillie Kellogg on April 16, 1944. There were six children born to them: Larry, Allan, Dale, Virginia, Russell, and Cindy.

On June 4, 1945, Virgil entered the United States Army and served during World War II as a Military Policeman at the Panama Canal. He received his honorable discharge on July 19, 1946 and returned to Harrison County where he farmed until 1957 when they made their home in Persia.

He began his own gas station and repair shop, Miller Garage, and ran his business for several years. He was a hard worker and enjoyed visiting with people when they stopped in. He also enjoyed yearly vacation trips with family and friends that took him and Lillie to every state in the Union as well as Canada.

Virgil was a member of the American Legion Post No. 314 in Persia and was a volunteer fireman for several years and served as fire chief for thirteen.

After Lillie’s death in 1991, Virgil continued living on his own until July of 2012 when he became a resident of Regency Nursing and Rehab in Council Bluffs, Iowa and then the Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, Iowa in November of 2012. He died on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, ten months, and fifteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lillie, daughter Virginia Martens, and sister Anna Mae Schafer and a brother who died in infancy.

He is survived by his children: Larry Miller of Harlan, Iowa, Allan Miller of Persia, Iowa, Dale Miller of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Russell Miller of Loveland, Colorado, Cindy Hulbert of Macedonia, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers Wayne Miller and his wife Lavonne of Persia and Loren Miller and his wife Barb of Brookings, South Dakota; other family members and friends.

Pastor Darwin Moore officiated the 1:30 PM funeral service on Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Quentin Hoffman, Lanny Newland, and John McKeighan. Serving as casket bearers were Rich Newland, Dennis Leinen, Randy Zacharias, Dan Manhart, David Albers, and Mark Carrigan. Military Rites were performed by the Persia American Legion Post No. 314 at the Valley View Cemetery in Persia, Iowa.
