James "Jim" McCallan - Age 43

James Edgar "Jim" McCallan was born on November 8, 1969 to Perry and Karen (Thomas) McCallan in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Council Bluffs. During high school he was active in Band and Speech and participated in the school plays and the swim team. He graduated from Glenwood High School with the Class of 1988.

In November of 1988, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps served as an aircraft mechanic during Operation Desert Shield. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1992.

Jim attended Iowa Western Community College and after receiving his Associate’s Degree, went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Iowa.

On November 22, 2000, he was united in marriage to Amy Arkfeld in Omaha, Nebraska. They had six children in their family: Bryenna, Taryn, Rayme, Avrey, Kane, and Devroe.

Jim worked as a technical writer at Vermeer in Pella for a while and then stayed home with the children when the family moved to Harlan and Amy ran a flower shop. He was a writer and artist and had been featured in the local papers for his paintings of the American and State of Iowa flags on his barns both in Harlan and Schleswig. The family had recently moved to Oregon where they enjoyed being outdoors, hiking, and enjoying nature. His family was the most important thing in the world to him and the time he spent with his children and granddaughter were among his most treasured moments.

Jim died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 in Winnemucca, Nevada having attained the age of forty-three years and twenty-six days. He is survived by his wife Amy McCallan of Ashland, Oregon; his children: Bryenna, Taryn, Rayme, Avrey, Kane, and Devroe; granddaughter Kairi; parents Perry and Karen McCallan of Glenwood, Iowa; sister Andrea and her husband Michael Williams of Glenwood, other family members and friends.

Rev. Chris Fontanini officiated the 7:00 PM funeral service on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Austin Hunborg, Brad Hockabout, Michael Williams, Jim Thomas, Sandy Williams, Mike Florian, and Jeff Thomas. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
