Richard "Dick" McLaughlin - Age 75

Richard John McLaughlin, son of Michael James and Sara Agnes (Powers) McLaughlin, was born outside of Portsmouth in Harrison County, Iowa on July 17, 1935. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth and attended grade school in the country near Portsmouth. Richard later went to school in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1954.

A few years after high school, Dick joined the United States Navy where he served aboard the USS Lake Champlain from 1956 to 1960. On January 27, 1962, Dick was united in marriage to Colleen Gertrude Goeser at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: Cheryl and Dan. Dick worked at Gambles for several years before going on to working parts and sales for farm implement stores in the Harlan and Avoca areas. Dick also spent several summers mowing lawns for the City of Harlan and drove a delivery truck for the Van Diest Supply Company out of Harlan.

Dick enjoyed years of toy tractor collecting, auctioneering, golfing with friends and family and family get togethers for his home cooked trash can feeds. Dick also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandsons. His latest enjoyment was spending time at the Farmall-Land USA Museum in Avoca welcoming and conversing with the visitors.

Dick died on Friday, November 26, 2010 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of seventy-five years, four months and nine days. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brother Jim; brothers-in-law: Robert Goeser and Robert Talbott and sisters-in-law: Marlene McLaughlin; Bernetta Ulrich and Betty Schmidt.

Dick is survived by his wife Colleen McLaughlin of Harlan; his children: Cheryl and her husband Jay Koester of Manchester, Iowa and Dan McLaughlin and his wife Amy of Overland Park, Kansas; his grandchildren: Lucas and Ben Koester and Justin McLaughlin; his sisters: Evelyn Talbott and her husband Mason Wagoner of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jerilyn and her husband Gail Hess of De Witt, Iowa; Pat Goeser of Crescent, Iowa and Jan and her husband Tim Pabst of Eagan, Minnesota.

Rev. John Frost celebrated an 11:00 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, November 29, 2010 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Burial was held in the Harlan Cemetery with Russell Goeser, Derrick Sudmann, Mike Kienast, Ben Koester, Justin McLaughlin, Lucas Koester, Scott Sievers and Brett Sherer serving as casket bearers.
