Gary Lee Madden, son of Charles and Margaret (VonTersch) Madden, was born on March 3, 1942 in Harlan, Iowa. He went to school in Avoca and was raised by his grandmother. He began working at an early age for Schueman’s in which he drove truck and hauled livestock.

On July 1, 1960 Gary was united in marriage to Shirley Pope in Harlan. They were the parents of one son, Charles Madden, Sr. The family made their home in Avoca and Gary worked for Rich Petersen for a few years before starting his own business called Madden’s Garage.

Shirley died on August 24, 1989 at the age of 46. Gary remained in the Avoca area and in the early 90's Madden’s Garage moved up town and became Madden and Akers.

He married Grace Pauley on October 19, 2001 in Harlan. His family grew by adding Grace’s children: Doug Pauley, Jr., Todd Pauley, and Gene Pauley and their families. Gary, or "Herm" as some referred to him as, continued to work hard and remained involved with racing, racing... and more racing. He enjoyed spending every weekend at the Shelby County Speedway watching his son and grandson’s race. Grace died in 2010 at the couple’s home in Avoca at the age of 68.

Gary enjoyed eating at Grandma’s Diner in Avoca, as well as the Victoria Station in Harlan. He spent many nights and weekends at the race track, surrounded by his family. His love and passion for both racing and his family were evident.
