Bertha Hansen - Age 88

Bertha Hansen was born on July 26, 1924 to Marius and Marie (Rasmussen) Christensen in Kimballton, Iowa. She attended school in Kimballton before graduating from Audubon High School in Audubon, Iowa. She completed training and graduated from the Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.

On February 27, 1952, Bertha was united in marriage to William "Bill" Hansen. There were two children born to this union: Ivan and Freda. Bertha and Bill lived on a farm north of Jacksonville, Iowa. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She had many talents of knitting, crocheting, tatting, and making quilts. She would knit hats and scarves and send them to The Seamen Organization for distribution.

It was very common for her family and friends to receive a card with a tatted cross included on birthdays and holidays. Bertha was very proud of her Danish heritage and would make traditional Danish foods for the holidays. She enjoyed traveling and had taken her mother back to Denmark and traveled several places with Bill to see friends and sitesee.

Bertha became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, in February of 2009, which is where she died on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, one month, and thirty days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister Esther Gearhart.

She is survived by her son Ivan Hansen and his wife Jan of Jacksonville, Iowa; her daughter Freda and her husband Brent Littleton of Valley Falls, Kansas, three grandchildren; brothers Kjer Christensen and his wife Loretta of Elk Horn, Iowa and Svend Christensen of Mitchellville, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and friends.

Rev. Paul Reynolds officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Glyn Thomas, Monte Hansen, Scott Larsen, Jim Thygesen, Mark Petersen, and William Carter. Interment was held at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa.
