Alfons N. Goeser - Age 87

Alfons Nicholas Goeser was born on November 19, 1924 to Henry and Mary (Wingert) Goeser in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School with the Class of 1942.

Alfons joined the United States Army on December 20, 1944 and served a very brief time during World War II. He received the Army of Occupation Medal and the Germany Victory Medal. He loved serving in the Army and said many times that he wished he would have stayed in. He received his honorable discharge in March of 1947.

On November 20, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marie Goeres. The two lived across the road from each other and Alfons would volunteer to walk down the lane and get the mail just so he could visit with Marie at the mailbox. The couple had six children: Darrell, Julie, Janie, Dean, Duane, and David. They farmed near Portsmouth, Iowa, for a short time then moved west of Earling where they farmed and raised dairy cows. Alfons retired in 1983 but lived on the farm until 1990 when they moved into Earling.

Alfons and Marie were married for forty-nine years when she died in June of 2000. He missed her greatly and talked about her often.

He loved playing baseball and watching sports and Nascar racing on TV. He would listen to all of the local Harlan Community games on the radio. He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage, trips to the casino, and after moving into Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, he enjoyed teasing the staff and giving them a hard time. They were always so friendly and kind that he knew they enjoyed it. He enjoyed being around the friends he had at the nursing home.

He was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa on February 22, 2012 and it was there that he died on Sunday, February 26, 2012, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, three months, and seven days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, daughter Julie, sons Dean and Duane, and brothers Cyril, Vincent, Rev. Ralph, Mark, and Ivan.

He is survived by his children: Darrell Goeser and his special friend Margie Emswiller of Dunlap, Iowa, Janie and her husband Bill Cleary of Bismarck, North Dakota, and David Goeser of Earling, Iowa; six grandchildren; son-in-law Cal Lamprecht of New Castle, Nebraska; sisters Margaret and her husband Dick Connell of Omaha, Nebraska and Theresa Zimmerman of New Richmond, Wisconsin; brother Joseph Goeser and his wife Monica of Red Wing, Minnesota; other family members and friends.

Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Mary Wilwerding accompanied Dave and Ruth Hoffmann. Honorary casket bearers were Krystle Lamprecht and Anne Cleary. Serving as casket bearers were Adam Lamprecht, Jeff Emswiller, Jerry Jo Hanigan, Matt Cleary, Joe Cleary, and Sean Cleary. Military Rites were performed by the Earling American Legion Post No. 615 at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa.
