Joseph L. Gittins - Age 30

Joseph Lee Gittins was born on July 21, 1981 to David and Debra (Horton) Gittins in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized at Shelby Presbyterian Church in Shelby, Iowa. He attended Tri-Center Schools and obtained his GED. He was a member of the Boy Scouts for three years.

On November 17, 2006, Joseph was united in marriage to Katie Plambeck in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They had one son, Garrett.

Joseph was the primary caretaker of Garrett and enjoyed being a stay-at-home dad. He would also help his father working on vehicles at Dave’s Auto in Minden, Iowa, and helped BoBo with the hogs on his farm. He was the only one who could get near the old sow when she had her babies. Joseph also worked at D and D Tire in Persia, Iowa and at Zimmerman Sales and Service in Neola, Iowa.

He was a huge fan of the Texas Longhorns, Tony Stewart racing, and was an avid collector of all things military.

Joseph died at his home on Saturday, May 19, 2012 having attained the age of thirty years, nine months, and twenty-eight days. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Harold and Barb Horton, Eugene Gittins, and Gladis Lenhart; brother Ryan Meinke; uncle Gary Gittins and nephew Ryan Gittins.

He is survived by his wife Katie Gittins of Persia, Iowa; son Garrett Gittins of Persia; mother Debra Horton-Gittins and Chuck Amos of Omaha, Nebraska; father David Gittins and Diana Meinke of Forsyth, Missouri; brothers Rodney Meinke and Roxanne Mick of Arispe, Iowa, Davey Gittins, Jr. and Jamie of Neola, Iowa, and Rusty Meinke of Neola; sister Julie and Thomas Burford of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister-in-law Adria Robertson of Neola; other family members and many friends.

Pastor Brian Wohlhutter officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pat Wiley was an honorary casket bearer. Serving as casket bearers were Donnie Gittins, Leroy Gittins, Justin Salmons, Jason Miller, Harold "Junior" Horton, Jeremy Ewoldt, Chad Brich, and Kevin Bruck. Interment was held at the Minden Cemetery in Minden, Iowa.
