Irene Elizabeth Green was born on July 21, 1922 to Charles and Mary (Walsh) O’Rourke in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in Missouri Valley. She graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1940. After high school, she attended College of St. Mary’s, and later attended Iowa Western Community College and enrolled in the nurses training program; she graduated as an LPN in May 1969.
On June 3, 1942, Irene was united in marriage to Francis Green at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Eight children were born to the marriage: Mary Jo, Robert, Donald, Susan Marie, Teresa, Leo, Tom and Geralyn. They moved near Neola and farmed until 1959, when they moved to Harlan where they started Green Trucking.
Irene worked at Myrtue Memorial Hospital as a nurse for twenty-eight years. She also continued working as a nurse installing and monitoring Lifelines. She spent quality time with her grandchildren and gave them each a quilt she had made. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and doing things with her grandchildren. Irene helped with Meals on Wheels and volunteered at the hospital gift shop. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, St. Michael’s Guild and was also a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Katherine #266 of Earling, Iowa.
Irene traveled around the United States and to Ireland with her husband Francis, to whom she was married for forty-four years. Following his death, she continued to travel, including visits to Europe, Korea and Medjugorje. She had the honor of being Mother of the Year in 1995.
Irene died on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-nine years, eleven months, and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Francis, daughter Susan Marie, son Donald, and daughter-in-law Julia Green.
She is survived by her children: Mary Jo and her husband Darrell Klein of Omaha, Nebraska; Robert Green of Omaha; Teresa and her husband Tom Scherer of Centennial, Colorado; Leo Green and his wife Sandy of Omaha; Tom Green and his wife Colette of Harlan, Iowa and Geralyn and her husband Arlan Christensen of Harlan; seventeen grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sisters Pat Shea and Rita Gubbles both of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Sr. Jeanne O’Rourke of Omaha; brothers: Don O’Rourke of Council Bluffs and Rev. Charles O’Rourke of Bellevue, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
Rev. Charles O’Rourke and Rev. John Frost celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Michelle Wild, Elizabeth Green, Arianna Green, Sarah Scherer, Shannon Green, Meghan Sorensen, and Erin Scherer. Casket bears were Jeff Klein, Patrick Green, Lucas Christensen, Todd Klein, David Christensen, Bryan Green, Nathan Scherer, TJ Scherer, Kelly Green, and Justin Green. Interment was held at Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
