Gladys Marie Nyrup was born on December 13, 1910 on a farm near Redline in Polk Township, Shelby County, Iowa to Chester and Edith (Mitten) Dahlof. She was baptized at Redline Church of Christ in her early teens. She attended school in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1927.

Gladys received normal training and taught school for two years at Polk Country School No. 8. She was united in marriage to Harold Nyrup on June 28, 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska. They spent the first two years of their marriage on a farm northeast of Harlan and then returned to the Redline area where they continued farming.

They moved in to Harlan in July of 1976 where they stayed until Harold’s death at age seventy-nine on May 19, 1986.

Gladys was a member of Myrtue Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary and the Baptist Home Auxiliary. She enjoyed making ceramics, painting, and sewing.

She moved into the Westridge Apartment when she was ninety-six years old and became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community at the age of ninety-eight years. She died on Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of one hundred one years, eight months, and thirteen days. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her parents Chester and Edith, and her sister Thelma Stock.

She is survived by her nieces Glenva Stoddard of Lincoln, Nebraska and Gayle Krause of Riverton, Wyoming; special caregiver Connie White of Harlan, Iowa; other family members and friends.

Tom Gaer officiated the 2:00 PM Graveside Service on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa. Rosalie Carlson was the vocalist.
